Chapter 6 - The Weight of Freedom

The silence that followed the elevator’s descent was heavy, profound, and utterly liberating.

Nora slowly stepped out from behind the marble kitchen island. Her legs felt weak, her hands trembling, but as she looked across the empty foyer where Cameron had just been broken down into a whimpering coward, a massive, crushing weight lifted off her chest.

She wasn't shaking from fear anymore. She was shaking from the sheer, staggering reality of being free.

Dante set his whiskey glass down on the counter. He turned around, his dark eyes meeting hers across the room. He didn't smile, but the hard, predatory edge in his posture had softened into something quiet and grounded.

“He’s gone,” Dante said simply.

Nora walked slowly across the concrete floor, stopping a few feet away from him. Tears streamed silently down her cheeks, but for the first time in years, they weren't tears of terror or despair.

“He’s really gone,” she whispered, her voice cracking. She looked down at her hands, then back up at Dante. “You... you just destroyed his entire life in five minutes.”

“He destroyed his own life the moment he decided to prey on someone weaker than him,” Dante replied evenly. He reached out, his warm thumb gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek—a touch so surprisingly tender that Nora’s breath caught in her throat. “You survived him, Nora. That makes you stronger than you realize.”

“I was so scared,” she admitted, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. “I didn't think I’d ever stop running.”

“You don't have to run anymore,” Dante said, his dark eyes holding hers with absolute certainty.

They stood there in the quiet penthouse, the storm outside washing against the massive glass windows, two broken fragments of different worlds somehow colliding in the dark.

Nora looked at the man who commanded syndicates, terrified a city, and yet had offered her safe harbor when she had nothing left.

“What happens to me now?” she asked softly.

A faint, genuine smile finally touched the corners of Dante Vance’s mouth.

“Whatever you want, Nora,” he murmured, stepping closer, his hand resting gently at her waist—not with possession, but with promise. “The city is yours. And if anyone ever tries to tell you otherwise... tell them to come talk to me.”
