Chapter 4 - The King's Court

Grant frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Nathan didn't answer. He simply reached down beneath the edge of his desk and pressed a small, unmarked brass button built into the woodwork.

Instantly, the heavy oak doors of the library slammed shut with a deafening bang. The heavy magnetic locks engaged with a deep, hydraulic thud that reverberated through the floorboards.

Sterling jumped back, startled. "What was that?"

From behind the velvet draperies at the far end of the room stepped Marcus Vance, accompanied by four men clad in full tactical gear, their submachine guns held at low-ready positions.

Grant’s eyes flashed with sudden anger. "You think four guards are going to save you, Nathan? I have twelve men surrounding this house right now—"

"You had twelve men," Marcus interrupted smoothly, his voice flat and professional. "They were neutralized three minutes ago by federal tactical units operating under an emergency warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois."

Grant went pale. "What warrant?"

Nathan opened the leather folder on his desk. Inside were dozens of certified bank statements, encrypted communication logs, and sworn affidavits from federal financial auditors.

"Did you really think I didn't know about Vanguard Asset Management, Grant?" Nathan asked, his voice echoing in the locked room like thunder. "Did you really think I spent two years sitting in this chair feeling sorry for myself?"

He pulled out a set of legal documents bearing the red seal of the Department of Justice.

"Every transaction you made through the Cayman accounts was mirrored to an offshore honeypot server set up by federal authorities sixteen months ago," Nathan said, his dark eyes burning into Grant’s soul. "We let you steal every single dollar, Grant. We needed you to draw Victor Vance out of hiding so we could link him to the hit on my life—and link you to the conspiracy to commit murder."

Grant took a quick step back, his hand darting toward his coat pocket.

"Don't," Marcus warned calmly, raising his sidearm with absolute precision. "The room is wired for high-definition video and audio. Everything you’ve said over the last five minutes has been broadcast directly to a federal magistrate currently waiting in a command vehicle at your front gate."

David Sterling immediately threw his hands into the air. "I didn't know! I swear to God, Nathan, I knew nothing about Vance! I was just told this was a standard restructuring!"

"Save it for the Grand Jury, David," Nathan said coldly.

Outside the heavy library doors, the muffled sounds of glass breaking and heavy footsteps shouted orders filled the air as federal agents swept through the estate, securing the property and taking Grant’s mercenaries into custody.

Grant stood frozen in the center of the room. His breath came fast and shallow, his polished, arrogant demeanor entirely shattered. He looked at Nathan—the man he had thought was a broken, helpless target—and saw only the terrifying, unyielding titan who had built an empire from nothing.

"Nate..." Grant stammered, his voice cracking. "Nate, please... we were brothers for fifteen years... you can't do this to me..."

Nathan looked at his former friend—the man who had watched him suffer, who had pretended to care, and who had tried to take everything he had built.

"A king doesn't share his crown with traitors, Grant," Nathan said softly.

The library doors clicked open, and six armed federal marshals spilled into the room, their weapons trained on Grant Holloway. Within seconds, Grant was forced to the ground, his arms twisted behind his back as steel cuffs clicked tight around his wrists.

As they dragged Grant out of the library, he looked back at Nathan one last time. But Nathan had already turned his back to him.

He was looking out the window, where the rain had finally stopped, allowing a ray of golden afternoon light to pierce through the parting gray clouds, illuminating the emerald gardens below.
