Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Gambit

The aftermath was silent. Julian didn't come back, but he didn't disappear, either. He started a proxy war—threatening the company, leaking rumors to the press, trying to drive the stock price down.
Nathan found himself back in the boardroom, not as a shell of a man, but as a warrior. He was ruthless, efficient, and unstoppable. He crushed Julian’s schemes one by one, using the very ruthlessness he had tried to suppress for seven years.
But he was tired.
He returned home late one night to find the kitchen filled with the smell of baking. Evie was there, but she wasn't wearing an apron. She was wearing a coat, her boxes packed by the door.
Nathan’s heart stopped. "What are you doing?"
"My work here is done," she said. "The house is breathing again. You’re back in the world. You don't need a cook anymore."
"I need you," Nathan said, the words spilling out before he could catch them.
Evie turned, her eyes wet. "You need someone to help you live, Nathan. Not someone to do it for you."
"Stay," he pleaded. "Not as a cook. Stay as... stay because this house is empty without you."
She walked toward him, the flour-dusted floorboards creaking under her boots. She looked at the man he had become—a man who was finally, painfully, beautifully alive.
"I’ll stay," she said, reaching up to brush the flour from his cheek. "But only if you promise me one thing."
"Anything."
"No more ghosts. Only the present."
Nathan looked at the watch on his wrist. He took it off, walked to the drawer, and didn't just put it away. He took out the battery, stopping the ticking forever.

He walked back to her, took her hand, and together, they stepped out onto the terrace. The fog was gone. The stars were brilliant, stretching out over the valley like a million opportunities.
The house was silent, but it wasn't a tomb anymore. It was a beginning.
