Chapter 9 - The Castle of the Four Kings
The kitchen of the Hale estate was warm, bright, and filled with the sweet, rich scent of freshly baked garlic bread and the slow, savory throb of a massive pot of marinara sauce bubbling on the stove.
The four boys were seated at the kitchen island, their hands busy rolling out fresh pasta dough with small wooden rolling pins Clara had bought them. Lily sat in the center, her dark curls covered in a tiny chef's hat, her face bright with a pure, uncomplicated joy as she showed Theo how to shape the dough into perfect, round tortellini.
"Look, Mom!" Ryder cried out, holding up a long, flat piece of dough that looked suspiciously like a snake. "I made a bridge for the castle!"
"It's a beautiful bridge, Ryder," Clara laughed, taking the dough and placing it gently on the floured board. "But let's make sure we have enough pasta for the walls first."
Victor stood in the doorway, his coat unbuttoned, his hand resting on the frame. He didn't look like a billionaire widower or a dangerous power broker today; he looked like a father who had finally found his way back to his own hearth.
He walked over to the island, took a piece of celery from the prep board, and dipped it into the marinara sauce, winking at Mason, who was currently trying to sneak a piece of bacon from the counter.
"You're late, Mr. Hale," Clara said, her green eyes shining with a quiet, playful defiance as she handed him a wooden spoon.
"No, Ms. Bennett," Victor said, his hand sliding around her waist, pulling her close against his side as the five children laughed around them. "I’m exactly on time."

The snow continued to fall outside, covering the quiet pastures of Lake Forest in a clean, white sheet, but inside the walls of the Hale house, the light was warm, steady, and completely unbreakable. They had survived the storm, they had rewritten the rules, and they had finally built a castle that no amount of gold could ever buy, and no amount of wind could ever tear down.
They were home.
