Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

The next morning, the sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden hue across the glass towers of Hartwell Data Systems.
Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, the quarterly audit meeting was underway. Richard Cole sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking immaculate in a charcoal suit, presenting the financial forecasts to the board of directors.
“As you can see, expansion into the European sector is fully funded,” Richard smiled smoothly, clicking his remote to advance the slide. “Our liquid assets are secure, and—”
The boardroom double doors swung open with a resounding bang.
Richard paused, annoyed, looking up to reprimand whoever had interrupted. But the words died in his throat.
Evelyn Hart walked into the room. She wasn't alone.
Flanking her were two federal agents in dark suits, and walking quietly behind them, carrying a simple canvas toolkit, was Mason Reed.
“Evelyn,” Richard stammered, standing up from his chair. “What is the meaning of this? We’re in the middle of a board review.”
“Sit down, Richard,” Evelyn commanded, her voice ringing with absolute, chilling authority. She walked to the head of the table, stood beside his chair, and plugged a secure flash drive into the main presentation console.
The large projection screen behind them flickered. Instead of financial charts, the screen displayed a real-time, encrypted ledger—showing six years of illegal wire transfers moving from Hartwell accounts directly into an offshore shell company registered under Richard Cole’s maiden name.
“You’ve been embezzling from the company for six years,” Evelyn said coldly, looking down at her COO. “And you used my startup’s original funding scandal as leverage to keep me quiet.”
Richard’s face turned the color of ash. He looked desperately around the room, seeing only closed doors and hostile stares from the board members.
“This is a forgery!” Richard shouted, lunging forward to unplug the console.
Before he could take two steps, Mason moved with incredible, practiced speed. He stepped into Richard’s path, grabbed his arm in a firm, unbreakable grip, and forced him back down into his chair with a quiet, efficient motion that belonged to a man who had spent years in high-stakes tactical rescue operations.
“Don't bother, Richard,” Mason said calmly, pulling a small audio recorder from his pocket and placing it on the table. “Every word you’ve said in this building for the last three months has been backed up to an off-site federal server. Including your conversation with Marcus Vance last night about liquidating the estate.”
The federal agents stepped forward, the heavy click of steel handcuffs echoing sharply through the silent boardroom.
“Richard Cole, you’re under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate conspiracy,” the lead agent announced, snapping the cuffs into place.

As Richard was hauled out of the room in disgrace, the board members sat in stunned silence. Evelyn turned to address them, her voice steady and resolute.
“The audit will be made public,” Evelyn told the board. “Every penny will be accounted for. Meeting adjourned.”
