Chapter 4 - The Harbor King’s Return

The news of me standing shocked the city, but the real shock was the man who emerged from the mansion. I wasn't the recluse anymore. I walked. It was clumsy, painful, and slow, but I walked.

I dismantled the security. I sold the business interests that were built on fear. I turned the mansion into a foundation for children with disabilities, a place where people like me—people who had lost their way—could find their feet again.

Maria’s family stayed. Lily became the daughter I never had, though she remained as mysterious as ever. She would disappear into the garden for hours, talking to shadows I couldn't see, and every time she returned, I felt a little more like the man Audrey had loved.

My enemies, of course, tried to move in. They thought the Harbor King was soft. They thought the 'miracle' had made me vulnerable.

A group of them cornered me in the city center a month later. They pulled guns, expecting the man in the chair. They weren't prepared for the man who stood up and stared them down with the cold, calculated precision of a predator protecting his pride.

"I spent eight years in a chair," I told them, my voice smooth and deadly. "You have no idea what you can learn about a person when you're watching them from below. I know where every cent of your money is hidden. I know where you bury your secrets. And I know that you aren't worth the bullet it would take to end you."

They fled. They didn't just leave the city; they left the state.
