Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

The snow fell harder over the Aspen peaks as the afternoon sun dipped behind the jagged ridge, casting a deep indigo shadow over the Caldwell estate. Inside the master suite, the atmosphere was entirely transformed. The air smelled of sweet vanilla, fresh pine needles, and toasted marshmallows.
Sarah and Emily had set up a makeshift art station near the hearth. Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace sat cross-legged on a plush wool rug, deeply engrossed in a watercolor painting session. Their little cheeks were flushed with warmth, and the blue tint of starvation and cold had vanished entirely, replaced by the healthy glow of children who finally felt safe.
I sat in the corner armchair, a cup of black coffee cooling in my hands, watching them. Every time one of them looked up to check if I was still there, our eyes would meet, and a small, reassuring smile from me would send them right back to their canvases with renewed giggles.
My phone buzzed on the side table. It wasn't the board of directors this time. It was a secure text from Marcus Vance, Vanessa’s brother and the architect of the multi-million-dollar corporate heist.
“Hey, Rich, heard there was some drama at the house last night. Vanessa’s not picking up her cell. We need to talk about that Denver property transfer before things get messy. Meet me at the lodge downtown in an hour.”
I stared at the screen, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of my mouth. Marcus still had no idea. He believed he was untouchable, sheltered behind shell companies and falsified corporate signatures. He thought he was dealing with the distracted, jet-lagged billionaire husband who only cared about spreadsheets and stock prices.
He didn't realize that the man he was poking was done playing defense.
I stood up quietly, making sure not to disturb the girls. I walked over to Emma, who was meticulously painting a purple sun on her paper.
“Daddy has to step out for a little while, sweetheart,” I said softly, crouching down to her eye level. “Sarah and Emily are going to stay right here with you. I won't be long.”
Emma paused, her paintbrush hovering over the paper. Her gray eyes searched my face with a momentary flicker of apprehension.
“You’re coming back, right?” she asked, her voice small.
“I promise you, with all my heart, I am coming right back,” I said, kissing her forehead. “Nobody is ever taking me away from you again.”

She nodded, satisfied, and went back to her purple sun.
I grabbed my heavy wool overcoat, slipped a small, encrypted recording device into my inner pocket, and walked out of the master suite, locking the heavy oak door securely behind me.
