Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Romano

By midnight, the offices of the federal district attorney downtown looked more like a war room than a government building.

Three federal prosecutors, two financial crimes investigators, and a team of cyber-forensics experts surrounded the conference table as Marco and I laid out the digital hard drives recovered from Luca’s harbor warehouse.

The evidence was staggering.

It wasn't just corporate espionage or insider trading. The files contained a complete paper trail of offshore accounts, bribed building inspectors, forged safety certifications, and—most damningly of all—recorded phone calls between Luca and senior members of the Romano family plotting the financial strangulation of the Moretti empire.

And right at the center of it all was the hit-and-run report from three years ago, detailing how David—Sophia’s husband—had been silenced before he could blow the whistle on the harbor warehouse structural failures.

A federal magistrate judge, woken in the middle of the night, had already signed a dozen emergency arrest warrants.

At 3:00 a.m., federal agents raided the Romano family estate across town, hauling away corporate executives in handcuffs while local news vans captured every second of their public humiliation.

I sat in my downtown office overlooking the harbor, a cup of cold coffee resting on my desk, watching the city lights stretch out into the dark.

The door opened softly, and Marco stepped inside.

“It’s done, sir,” Marco reported, his voice steady. “Luca is in federal holding with no bail. Isabella’s father was picked up at his private airstrip trying to board a flight to the Cayman Islands. The corporate board has called an emergency meeting for 8:00 a.m. to strip the Romanos of all voting shares.”

“And Sophia and Emma?” I asked.

“They’re settled in the secure uptown residence. I left two men on guard. Sophia wanted me to give you this.”

Marco placed a small, folded piece of paper on my desk.

I unfolded it. Inside was a neat, handwritten note:

“Thank you for giving my husband back his name, and for giving my daughter a world where she doesn't have to be afraid of the dark anymore. — Sophia.”

I stared at the words for a long time.

For years, I had believed that running an empire meant building impenetrable walls, signing ironclad contracts, and trusting no one outside the bloodline. I had believed that power was measured by how tightly you could control the pieces on the board.

Today, my grand alliance had collapsed. My wedding had ended in ruins. My own flesh and blood had tried to destroy me from within.

And yet, looking at that small note, I felt lighter than I had in a decade.

The rot had been cut out. The illusion of safety had been replaced by the absolute, unyielding truth.
