Chapter 6 - The Architect Wakes

The next day, Griffin was back in the ICU. The twins were sitting on either side of the bed, reading to their mother. Hazel was reading a book about architecture, explaining the different types of bridge construction, while Iris was telling her about their day at school.

Griffin stood at the doorway, watching them. The scene was so beautiful, so perfect, that it felt like a dream.

Suddenly, the heart monitor chirped.

A sharp, steady rhythm.

Griffin stepped into the room. "Sloan?"

Sloan’s eyelids fluttered. They were heavy, struggling, but they opened.

She looked at the ceiling, her eyes disoriented, then shifted her gaze to the girls.

"Mommy?" Hazel whispered, her voice trembling.

Sloan looked at them, a small, weak smile forming on her lips. She tried to lift a hand, and Iris took it immediately.

"I'm here," Sloan whispered, her voice like sandpaper.

Then she turned her head. Her eyes met Griffin’s.

She didn't look surprised. She looked... relieved.

"You found us," she said.

Griffin walked to the bedside, his heart expanding until it hurt. "I found you. And I'm not letting you hide anymore."

He leaned over and kissed her forehead, his tears falling onto her cheek.

"The girls are perfect," he whispered. "They're brilliant, and they're strong, and they're yours. And I am so, so sorry."

Sloan looked at the girls, then back at him, her eyes filling with tears. "I didn't want to hurt you, Griffin."

"You didn't," he said. "You saved me. You saved us."

The room was filled with the sound of their tears, but they were tears of relief, of release, of hope.

For the first time in ten years, the secret was gone. The architecture of their lives was finally, beautifully real.

And as the sun set over the city, casting a warm glow through the ICU window, Griffin realized that the skyscraper he’d been building his whole life was nothing compared to the home he was about to build with her.
