Chapter 5 - The Confession on Tape

Rodrigo stumbled backward out of his chair, knocking the leather seat over onto the floor. He stared at Mariana as if she were a rotting corpse returned from hell.
“M-Mariana... how...?” Rodrigo stammered, his hands shaking violently. “We buried you... I watched them drop the casket...”
“You watched a rushed, oversized box get lowered into a hole because you were too cowardly to check if the paralytic agent your mother sourced had actually stopped our hearts,” Mariana said, closing the distance between them with slow, measured steps. “You gave us just enough potassium chloride to mimic cardiac arrest, hoping we’d suffocate under the earth before morning. But you miscalculated, Rodrigo. A mother’s will to protect her children is stronger than six feet of dirt.”
Victoria finally found her voice, her aristocratic composure desperately trying to stitch itself back together through sheer panic.
“Security!” Victoria shrieked, lunging for the service bell on the wall. “Guard! Get these trespassers out of my house!”
“Nobody is coming, Victoria,” a calm, steady voice echoed from the doorway.
Two men in tailored dark suits stepped into the dining room from the foyer. Behind them strode Detective Ramos of the Chicago Police Department, holding a digital audio recorder in his hand with its red recording light blinking brightly.
Marcus Vance tried to stand up and slip toward the side exit, but one of the suits—a federal marshal—stepped into his path, resting a hand heavily on his holster.
Rodrigo looked wildly between the police officers and Mariana. “This... this is an illegal entry! You broke into my home!”
“No, Rodrigo,” Detective Ramos said, stepping forward and clicking a button on the recorder.
From the small speaker, Rodrigo’s own voice echoed clearly through the silent dining room:
—"Rest in peace, darling. You always were too naive for this world... with Vanguard acquiring your construction land at a fraction of its value, we all win..."
Detective Ramos snapped the recorder off and looked directly at Rodrigo with disgusted eyes.
“Mr. Romero, that confession was broadcast live to my cruiser parked outside through a wiretap we placed after the cemetery caretaker reported suspicious midnight digging at the family plot,” Detective Ramos said smoothly. “Along with the financial transfer records from Vanguard Holdings, the signed medical fraud affidavits from your bribed physician, and the chemical residue reports from the birthday cake recovered by our forensic team this afternoon.”
Victoria collapsed back into her chair, her antique pearls rattling against her chest as her entire body trembled. Her empire, built on decades of deceit, murder, and intimidation, had crumbled in less than five minutes.
“You’re finished,” Mariana said, standing right in front of her husband.
Rodrigo looked down into Mariana’s eyes, seeing not the quiet, obedient wife he had tried to bury, but a stranger who owned his entire destruction.
“Take them all away,” Detective Ramos commanded.
As the federal marshals and police officers snapped the cold steel handcuffs around Rodrigo’s and Marcus’s wrists, Victoria was hoisted up by female officers, her face twisted in bitter, defeated rage.

As they were led past her toward the front doors, Mariana didn't shout. She didn't cry. She simply reached down, took Mateo and Santiago by their hands, and guided them out of the dark, suffocating mansion into the cool, bright air of the night.
The nightmare was over. The graves were empty. And their real life was finally beginning.
