Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Summer arrived in New York with a brilliant, golden warmth that touched every corner of our lives without burning.
The driveway where our nightmare had begun was now quiet, peaceful, and lined with newly planted hydrangeas that Emily and I had spent the weekend putting into the soil.
Inside the house, the afternoon sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, catching the dust motes dancing in the air.
Emily sat at the wooden dining table, reviewing paperwork for her new position as a financial analyst at a boutique legal firm downtown—a career she had paused years ago under Brandon’s manipulative control, but now joyfully reclaimed.
In her stroller beside the table, nine-month-old Grace was cooing happily, clutching a small stuffed rabbit while staring up at the mobile turning gently above her head.
The doorbell rang.
I walked down the hallway, opened the front door, and found the mail carrier standing on the porch, handing me a small stack of letters.
“Thank you, Mike,” I smiled, taking the envelopes.
As I flipped through them—bills, community flyers, and a postcard from Thomas who was currently vacationing in Maine—a small, unmarked envelope fell to the porch floor.
I bent down and picked it up.
There was no return address. Just my name written in neat, familiar cursive.
I opened the flap and pulled out a single photograph.
It was a picture of Emily, Grace, and me taken on the porch steps just last week—laughing, sunlight catching our hair, looking completely free. On the back of the photo, written in a child’s clumsy handwriting, were three simple words:
We are safe.
May you like
I turned the photo over, smiled, and tucked it safely into the pocket of my cardigan.
Then I turned back toward the bright, noisy, beautiful sound of my daughter and granddaughter laughing in the kitchen, and closed the front door behind me.
