Chapter 4 - The Asset Strip

The legal dismantling of the Sterling family empire was swift, merciless, and absolute.
With Evelyn and Tyler locked behind bars facing a minimum of fifteen years without the possibility of early parole, the civil litigation began. Evelyn’s estate, built on decades of shady real estate investments and aggressive corporate buyouts, was systematically dismantled by the forensic auditors Marcus and Evelyn Vance (my attorney) brought in.
Every cent that Tyler had attempted to siphon from Rachel’s personal trust fund was clawed back with interest. The sprawling suburban mansion where Evelyn lived—purchased using co-signed loans that relied on forged signatures—was seized by the bank and auctioned off to pay legal restitution.
Vanessa’s involvement in the conspiracy cost her everything as well; abandoned by her legal team when her family cut off her funding, she accepted a plea deal for lesser accessory charges in exchange for testifying against Evelyn and Tyler, leaving her with a permanent felony record and a ruined reputation that no amount of social maneuvering could ever repair.
One afternoon, three weeks after the arraignment, I sat on the back porch of my home with a cup of hot chamomile tea.
The sun was beginning to dip below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet. Inside the house, soft lullabies played from the nursery, where Rachel was rocking little Lily to sleep. The dark shadows of fear and trauma that had haunted my daughter’s eyes since the incident had finally begun to recede, replaced by the quiet, radiant strength of a woman who had reclaimed her life.
The back door slid open softly, and Rachel stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a cozy cardigan. She walked over and sat down in the wicker chair beside me, resting her head gently on my shoulder.
"The lawyers called an hour ago," Rachel said softly, her voice steady and peaceful.
"What did they say?" I asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and giving her a warm squeeze.
"The judge signed the final dissolution decree," she replied, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. "Full sole custody of Lily. All shared assets awarded to me as restitution. Tyler’s name has been permanently expunged from our birth certificates and legal records. He doesn't exist anymore."

I looked down at her, my heart swelling with an immense, fierce pride. "It's over, sweetheart."
"It's over," Rachel agreed, turning her face to catch the last warm rays of the evening sun. "We're finally free."
