Chapter 5 - The First Sunrise

Three weeks later, the municipal court granted an expedited settlement.

The fraudulent mortgages on the Cumberland Avenue house were nullified due to proven forgery, restoring the title entirely to my name. Gavin was remanded to county custody awaiting trial on three counts of felony fraud and identity theft, abandoned by the high-priced defense lawyers who quickly realized his offshore accounts had been successfully frozen by the forensic audit.

Brooke had packed up her things and moved back into our parents’ house—a home now heavy with recrimination, shared guilt, and the crushing weight of legal debt as my father’s corporate accounts faced a parallel state investigation for tax irregularities. They didn't call me. They didn't text me. They had finally learned the terrifying lesson of what happens when you mistake silence for weakness.

On a crisp Tuesday morning just after dawn, I stood on the wide wooden front porch of the Cumberland Avenue house with a steaming mug of black coffee in my hand.

The air was sharp and clean, smelling of damp earth and coming autumn. Down the street, the neighborhood was slowly waking up, commuter cars humming softly as they headed toward the highway.

The silver Volvo that had sat in my driveway on the night of my betrayal was long gone, replaced only by the morning sunlight washing across the freshly painted white siding.

I took a slow sip of my coffee, looking out over the maple trees lining the street. The leaves were just beginning to turn amber and gold at the edges.

My phone buzzed on the patio table beside me.

It was a text message from David Vance: “Final asset transfer cleared from the primary trust. You are the sole beneficiary of First Star Holdings, effective immediately.”

I smiled, unlocked my screen, and typed a brief, final reply: “Thank you, David. Let’s close the ledger.”

I set the phone down, slipped my hand up my arm to touch the antique gold bracelet resting securely against my wrist, and watched the first bright ray of the sun break cleanly over the horizon.
