Chapter 6 - THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE

"Adrian," Robert said, his voice dropping into its familiar, commanding tone. "Turn that off. You are emotional. You don't understand the realities of the world we live in."

"I understand that you killed my child," Adrian said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sounded exactly like his father’s, but filled with a raw, human pain that Robert could never feel. "I understand that you poisoned my mother. And I understand that you are going to prison."

Robert let out a short, dry laugh. "Prison? On what evidence, Adrian? A digital recording that can be edited? A medical report that my lawyers have already had sealed? You have nothing. If you try to destroy me, you destroy the Whitmore name. You destroy your own future."

"I don't care about the name, Dad," Adrian said, stepping into the room to stand beside his mother. "The name is dirty anyway."

"We’ll see about that," Robert said, turning back to his desk. "Arthur is already meeting with the Harrow family. The merger is proceeding. If you choose to align yourself with your mother's delusions, you will find yourself on the street by morning."

"Let's go, Adrian," Margaret said, gripping her son’s arm. "We have what we need."

They walked out of the mansion together, the heavy front doors slamming shut behind them like the end of an era.

The next morning, the local newspaper ran a front-page article on the upcoming merger between Whitmore Enterprises and Harrow Logistics—a multi-million-dollar deal that would consolidate the region’s shipping and timber industries under a single board.

The article featured a photo of Robert Whitmore and Victor Harrow shaking hands, both men smiling with the cold, confident satisfaction of kings.

Margaret sat in Clara’s hospital room, watching the television mounted on the wall. Clara was awake now, her face still pale, but her eyes bright with a quiet, fierce intelligence.

"He won't let it go, Margaret," Clara said, her voice soft but steady. "He will use the Harrow merger to buy his way out of any investigation. He’s already paid the hospital administrator. The doctor came in this morning and said my blood work was 'clear of any unusual compounds.'"

"Evelyn has the results from the bottle, Clara," Margaret said, holding her daughter-in-law's hand. "And we have the ledger. But Robert is right about one thing: in this town, the police and the courts belong to him. If we just go to the local sheriff, the files will disappear before they ever reach a judge."

"Then we don't go to the local sheriff," Adrian said, walking into the room with a laptop in his hand. "I’ve been speaking to an old friend from law school who works for the federal prosecutor’s office in Columbia. Because Whitmore Enterprises operates across state lines and uses federal timber lands, this isn't just a local issue. If we can prove Robert used company funds to pay bribes and purchase restricted substances under a fraudulent veterinary license, it’s a federal case."

"But we need to make sure he doesn't see it coming," Margaret said. "If he knows the feds are investigating, he’ll shred every document in the office and transfer the funds to offshore accounts before they can freeze them."

"He’s announcing the merger at the Whitmore Charity Gala on Friday," Adrian said, his eyes narrowing. "Every major investor, the local press, and the federal regional director will be in the room. He wants to use the gala to show the world that he is untouchable."

"Then we will give him his stage," Margaret said, her voice cold. "And we will make sure everyone is watching when he falls."
