Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Fall

The emergency room doors swung open just as Caleb Sterling ran inside.
His shirt was untucked, his face pale, and his hands were trembling.
"Where's my wife?"
A nurse pointed him toward the labor and delivery unit.
"She's stable for now, but the doctors are trying to stop premature labor."
Caleb's heart sank.
Only thirty minutes earlier, Olivia had texted him a simple message.
"Your mom seems calmer now. Hurry back."
Now she was fighting to keep their baby safe.

Outside the room, Eleanor sat with perfect posture, crossing one elegant leg over the other.
She barely looked worried.
"I already explained everything," she told anyone willing to listen.
"She became emotional. Pregnant women overreact."
Caleb stared at her.
"What happened?"
Eleanor sighed dramatically.
"I simply told Olivia she should be more careful. She started yelling, lost her balance, and fell."
Caleb didn't answer.
Instead, he quietly asked,
"Did anyone else see it?"
"No."
"The cameras?"
For the first time, Eleanor hesitated.
"...What cameras?"
Caleb looked directly into her eyes.
"The security cameras."
Color drained from Eleanor's face.
She had forgotten.
Three months earlier, Caleb had installed a complete security system after a series of package thefts.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
Even the living room.
Everything had been recorded.
Caleb drove home without another word.
He entered the study and opened the security footage.
At first, everything looked ordinary.
Olivia stood near the kitchen island drinking water.
Eleanor folded towels while criticizing the nursery decorations.
Then the conversation grew louder.
Even without perfect audio, Caleb could read enough from their lips.
"You trapped my son."
"You'll never be a Sterling."
"That child deserves a better mother."
Olivia turned away.
She placed one protective hand over her stomach.
She tried to leave.
Then...
Caleb froze.
Eleanor grabbed Olivia's arm.
Hard.
Olivia pulled away.
Eleanor shoved her.
Not violently.
But hard enough.
Nine months pregnant, Olivia stumbled backward.
Her heel caught the edge of the rug.
She crashed against the kitchen island before collapsing onto the floor.
She never tried to hit Eleanor.
She never screamed.
She simply cried out in pain while protecting her stomach with both arms.
Caleb watched the footage three times.
Each replay broke something inside him.
He copied every recording onto three separate drives.
Then he called someone he hadn't spoken to in nearly a year.
"Daniel?"
"I'm going to need your help."
Daniel Brooks had been Caleb's college roommate.
Now he was an attorney specializing in civil litigation.
"What happened?"
"My mother crossed a line."
Back at the hospital, Olivia finally woke up.
The first thing she whispered was,
"The baby?"
The doctor smiled gently.
"Your little girl is still fighting."
Tears rolled down Olivia's cheeks.
"And my husband?"
"He's on his way back."
When Caleb returned that evening, he didn't speak to Eleanor.
He walked directly to Olivia's bedside.
He kissed her forehead.
"I'm so sorry."
She squeezed his hand.
"It wasn't your fault."
"No."
May you like
His voice became quiet.
"But it ends today."
