Chapter 3: The Financial Illusion

That afternoon, Lorraine arrived with Ryan.

This time she wasn't asking.

She was demanding.

The moment I opened the door, she pushed past me.

"You think changing a lock changes anything?"

I calmly closed the door behind her.

"No."

"Then stop acting ridiculous."

I walked to the dining table.

A stack of documents waited there.

Neatly organized.

Prepared.

Ryan's face immediately darkened.

"What's this?"

"The truth."

Lorraine laughed.

"Oh, please."

I handed Ryan the first folder.

His smile vanished.

The second.

His face turned pale.

The third.

He sat down.

Hard.

Because every account he believed belonged to him told a different story.

The luxury vehicles?

Leased through my trust.

The vacation property?

Mine.

The brokerage account he bragged about?

Funded entirely by assets inherited from my grandparents.

Even the company investment he often called "our biggest financial win" had originated from capital I provided.

Lorraine grabbed a document.

Then another.

Then another.

The confidence disappeared from her eyes.

"That can't be right."

"It is."

Ryan looked stunned.

"You never told me."

I folded my hands.

"You never asked."

Silence filled the room.

For years they had assumed.

Assumed ownership.

Assumed power.

Assumed superiority.

May you like

Now assumptions were colliding with facts.

And facts were winning.
