Chapter 7 - The Verdict and the Sentence

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Harrison’s voice boomed through the silent courtroom, sharp and absolute. "Throughout this trial, your defense has attempted to frame this horrific incident as a minor domestic disagreement. They have attempted to minimize your actions as 'housekeeping' and 'maternal guidance.' But let me be crystal clear."
Marilyn stiffened, her jaw clenching as she stared up at the bench.
"What you did on the afternoon of September twelfth was not guidance. It was a calculated, vicious act of physical violence and psychological domination. You trapped another human being against their will, stripped away their bodily autonomy, and inflicted both physical injury and deep emotional trauma. Furthermore, your blatant violation of the court-issued protection order demonstrates a complete and utter contempt for the law."
Judge Harrison paused, picking up his gavel.
"On the charge of Unlawful Imprisonment, I sentence you to six months in the Franklin County Correctional Center. On the charge of Domestic Battery, I sentence you to twelve months, to be served consecutively. On the charges of Witness Intimidation and Protection Order Violation, an additional six months will be added, bringing your total sentence to twenty-four months in state custody, with no possibility of parole for the first eighteen."
The courtroom erupted into a muted murmur of shock.
Marilyn’s face turned the color of ash. She gasped, turning frantically toward her attorney. "You said—you told me it would just be probation! You said I wouldn't spend a single night behind bars!"
Her attorney lowered his head, gathering his paperwork into his briefcase without making eye contact.
Two bailiffs stepped forward immediately. They walked up behind Marilyn, placing their hands firmly on her shoulders. As they pulled her arms behind her back to snap the steel handcuffs into place, Marilyn twisted her head around, her eyes locking onto Clara and Ethan with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.
"You ruined my life!" Marilyn screamed as the bailiffs guided her toward the heavy side doors of the courtroom. "Both of you! You're dead to us! You're dead!"
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her frantic shrieks.
Silence descended upon the courtroom once more—a heavy, profound silence that felt like the lifting of a decades-long storm.
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath. The tightness in her chest, the persistent ghost-pain at the back of her neck, finally dissolved into nothingness. She looked across the aisle at Ethan.

Ethan was smiling—a real, unburdened smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He stood up, walked around the table, and pulled Clara into his arms, holding her tightly in the center of the quiet courtroom.
"It's over," Ethan whispered against her hair. "We're free."
