Chapter 2 - The Consultation at Dawn

The morning sun cast a cold, watery light across the glass skyline of downtown Chicago. By 8:00 a.m., I was sitting in a high-rise conference room on the forty-second floor of the Willis Tower, holding a sleeping Lily in my arms while a paralegal poured me a cup of black coffee.

Across the mahogany table sat attorney Victoria Vance.

Known throughout the Midwest as "The Executioner" in high-net-worth family law and asset protection, Victoria was sixty years old with sharp, silver-streaked hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and a reputation for eating abusive spouses and toxic in-laws alive in court. She didn't do sympathy cards or gentle hand-holding. She did results.

Victoria placed her glasses on the table and slid my thick, color-coded binder toward herself.

For forty-five minutes, she didn't interrupt me. She simply turned the pages, examining the medical report from the urgent-care clinic, the photos of Diane’s kitchen cleaner burns on my hands, the bank statements proving that Jason had drained our joint savings to fund his sister Brooke’s boutique, and the digital logs of every threat, insult, and manipulation.

When she reached the final page—the pediatric documentation of Lily’s swollen left cheek—Victoria finally looked up. Her eyes were as cold and sharp as polished steel.

“You’ve been compiling this for three years?” Victoria asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

“From the day I realized Jason wasn’t going to change,” I replied, shifting Lily slightly against my shoulder. “I didn't want to start a war without an army. I wanted receipts.”

Victoria offered a slow, terrifying smile.

“Mrs. Bennett,” she said, folding her hands together, “you didn’t just bring me an ordinary custody and divorce case. You brought me a complete structural demolition. Jason Bennett is listed as a junior partner at his father’s commercial real estate firm, but his salary is heavily subsidized by family trusts held under Diane’s direct control. Meanwhile, this condo you lived in? It’s registered under a family LLC that Diane controls, which means they’ve been using it to trap you while pretending you were financially dependent.”

“Can we pierce the LLC?” I asked.

“Pierce it?” Victoria laughed softly. “We’re going to shatter it. Between the emergency protective orders for Lily, the documented physical assault by Diane captured partially on Brooke’s livestream backup files—which my IT team already retrieved from the cloud before Brooke could delete them—and the financial misappropriation of marital funds, we’re going to strip Diane of her precious condo, freeze Jason’s personal assets, and secure full sole custody with zero unsupervised visitation.”

My phone buzzed on the table.

It was Jason. Then another text from Brooke. Then a frantic voice note from Diane claiming I had kidnapped her granddaughter and demanding I return home immediately to apologize.

I slid the phone across the table to Victoria.

“Block them all,” Victoria instructed her paralegal. “From this second forward, every single communication goes through my office. Welcome to your counter-offensive, Emily. Let’s go remind the Bennetts what happens when you mistake a mother’s patience for weakness.”
