Chapter 6 - The True Owner

Patricia managed to scramble to her feet, her voice shaking with hysterical fury as she pointed a trembling finger at Evelyn.

“You—you ungrateful, manipulative bitch!” Patricia screamed, breaking all decorum in front of the investors. “You planned this! You humiliated my son over a personal dispute! Security! Throw her out!”

“Sit down, Patricia,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the side entrance of the ballroom.

Thomas Ellery stepped forward, flanked by four resort security officers in formal uniform. But they weren't looking at Patricia. They were standing at strict attention.

Patricia blinked, sneering at the general manager. “How dare you tell me to sit down? Do you know who my son is? Do you know what this contract means to—?”

“I know exactly who your son is, Mrs. Whitmore,” Thomas interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like cold steel. “And I know exactly what this contract is. Because without the express written authorization of the majority shareholder and sole decision-maker of the Hart Family Trust, this partnership does not exist.”

The auditorium fell even quieter, if possible. Investors turned their heads from Thomas to Grant, and finally to Evelyn.

Grant swallowed hard, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. His eyes darted toward his wife, the terrifying realization finally dawning on him.

“Evelyn...” Grant whispered, his voice trembling as he reached out a desperate, shaking hand. “What... what is he talking about? Majority shareholder of... of what?”

Evelyn didn't take his hand. She looked at him with a chilling, detached pity.

“You spent five years telling your parents that I was quiet, fragile, and limited, Grant,” Evelyn said, her voice carrying clearly across every microphone in the room. “You believed you married a decorative appendage who would help you network with the elite while you ran your business into the ground.”

She turned to face the stunned group of New York investors sitting in the front rows.

“My name is Evelyn Hart Whitmore,” she announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “My father, Charles Hart, built Monarch Cove. When he passed away, he didn't leave this resort to a board of directors, and he certainly didn't leave it to an ambitious wellness startup. He left 100% of the voting shares to me.”

Gasps echoed through the investor rows. The lead venture capitalist from New York slowly stood up, adjusting his glasses, staring at Evelyn with sudden, profound realization.

“You... you are the silent trust partner we’ve been trying to pitch for six months,” the investor breathed.

“I am,” Evelyn confirmed. “And the twenty-million-dollar venture capital injection Grant was planning to announce today? It was contingent upon securing Monarch Cove as his flagship retreat.”

She looked back at Grant, whose knees were visibly trembling beneath his bespoke trousers.

“And as the sole decision-maker of this resort,” Evelyn continued, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper, “I hereby terminate all partnership talks with Whitmore Renewal, effective immediately.”
