Chapter 4 - The Audit

Downstairs, I heard a sharp, panicked gasp.
Through the security monitor, I watched Adrian bolt upright out of his leather chair, his hands slamming onto the desk as he stared at his monitor in absolute horror.
The screen wasn't showing his offshore shell accounts anymore. It was displaying a live, real-time forensic audit report compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Banking Commission—starting with the forged notary stamps from three weeks ago, tracing the wire fraud straight through Julian Vance’s dummy corporation in the Caymans, and ending with a formal freeze order on every single account associated with Cole Enterprises.
“What... what is this?” Adrian choked out to the empty room, his face turning the color of skim milk.
He grabbed his phone, frantically dialing Julian’s number, but the call went straight to a dead tone.
Before Adrian could even process what was happening, the heavy front door security alarm didn't ring—it chirped once, and then the deadbolts clicked open.
My forensic attorney, standing alongside two federal marshals and local law enforcement officers, stepped into the foyer.
Through the monitor, I watched Adrian freeze. He turned toward the study door as heavy footsteps marched across the hardwood floor.
“Adrian Cole?” a deep, authoritative voice called out. “Step away from the desk with your hands where we can see them. You are under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, forgery, and interstate financial conspiracy.”
“There’s a mistake!” Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate panic as he backed away from the desk. “This is a civil matter! My wife—my wife signed those papers! She agreed to this!”
“Your wife didn't agree to anything, Mr. Cole,” the federal agent replied smoothly, holding up a certified handwriting analysis report alongside a federal subpoena. “In fact, Mrs. Cole filed a comprehensive criminal complaint against you six weeks ago. We’ve been monitoring these accounts since the day you touched them.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. He stood frozen in the center of the study, the man who had spent two years orchestrating my absolute destruction suddenly realizing he was the one trapped in a cage of his own making.
“Where is she?” Adrian whispered, his eyes darting frantically toward the ceiling. “Where is Chloe?!”

I didn't answer through the intercom.
Instead, I slowly stood up from the bed, smoothed down the front of my silk robe, and walked gracefully down the grand staircase.
