Chapter 2 - The Audit of a Liar

Within minutes, the front hall of the grand estate was transformed into an impromptu tribunal.

The two corporate attorneys moved with chilling efficiency, snapping open leather briefcases and pulling out thick stacks of financial transcripts, internal audit reports, and legal affidavits. They didn't enter the house as guests; they entered as executioners.

"Mr. Vance," the lead attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn Vance (no relation to Daniel, much to his horror), addressed him coldly. "As of 9:00 AM this morning, the internal compliance division of Harlow Industries has concluded its preliminary forensic review of your regional division."

Daniel stared at the papers, his voice failing him. "Review? What review? The merger with the Pacific conglomerate isn't scheduled for board approval until—"

"Until tomorrow morning," Evelyn finished for him, sliding a financial ledger across the mahogany console table. "A merger you engineered by systematically embezzling capital development funds, redirecting corporate accounts to shell companies, and billing lavish personal expenses—including luxury hotel suites, champagne, and jewelry—directly to corporate overhead."

Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, taking a panicked step toward the door. "I had nothing to do with this! I was just an executive assistant following directives—"

"You were an accomplice, Ms. Hale," Julian Harlow interrupted, stepping forward, his eyes boring into her like molten steel. "And your name is already at the top of the federal indictment list for corporate fraud and accessory to embezzlement."

Julian walked slowly toward Daniel, stopping just inches from the trembling regional president. The power dynamic in the room had shifted so violently that the air felt thick and pressurized.

"You thought you were marrying a helpless housewife, Daniel," Julian said quietly, his voice dangerously calm. "You thought you could discard my daughter and my granddaughter like broken furniture, toss them onto the lawn, and go back to your corporate climb. But let me make one thing crystal clear to you: everything you thought you built, everything you thought you owned, and every single title you hold—it all belongs to the Harlow Family Trust."

Daniel’s face drained of the last remaining drop of color. "The... the trust? But the deed is in my name—"

"The deed is held by a shell corporation that answers exclusively to the primary beneficiary," Claire said, stepping down from the porch, her infant daughter still cradled safely against her chest. She looked down at the shattered pieces of white wood lying on the grass. "And as of right now, I am revoking your residency."

She turned her gaze to the head of corporate security.

"Escort Mr. Vance and Ms. Hale off the property immediately," Claire commanded. "And make sure Ms. Hale leaves my mother's emerald necklace behind."

Vanessa sobbed, frantically unfastening the clasp of the necklace with trembling fingers and dropping it onto the foyer table before security guards grabbed her firmly by the arm.

Daniel tried to lunge forward, a desperate, feral look in his eyes. "Claire! You can't do this! We have a life together! Think of the scandal—think of what this will do to the company's stock—"

"The company's stock will rise the moment the board sees how swiftly we amputate a cancer," Julian stated coldly.

Two security guards seized Daniel by the shoulders, dragging him bodily toward the front doors. His expensive shoes scraped helplessly against the marble flooring as he shouted curses and desperate pleas that faded into the freezing winter wind.

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, sealing their fate, the grand foyer returned to an absolute, profound quiet.
