Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Office

An hour later, two plainclothes detectives from the Milwaukee Police Department’s financial crimes unit, accompanied by Claire and me, walked through the glass double doors of the logistics corporate park where Brandon worked as a regional operations manager.
The receptionist looked up in shock as the detectives flashed their badges and requested immediate access to Brandon’s executive suite.
We walked down the carpeted hallway, the heavy oak door of Brandon’s office standing slightly ajar. Through the gap, we could hear him shouting into his phone.
“I don’t care what Lucas says! Tell him to scrape together the cash from somewhere else! If this land deal collapses, we are ruined—the feds are already sniffing around corporate filings!”
Detective Miller pushed the door wide open, stepping into the office with an authoritative stride.
Brandon froze mid-sentence, the phone pressed against his ear. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he saw Detective Miller, followed closely by Detective Vance, and then—standing right behind them—me.
“Brandon Ross?” Detective Miller asked formally, pulling a set of cold steel handcuffs from his belt.
“What... what is this?” Brandon stammered, dropping his phone onto the desk. It clattered loudly against the wooden surface. “You can’t be serious! This is a civil dispute! I’m a corporate officer!”
“You’re under arrest for felony wire fraud, grand larceny, and fraudulent conversion of marital assets under Wisconsin state and federal statutes,” Detective Miller stated calmly, stepping forward and grabbing Brandon’s arm.
“No! Wait! This is a mistake!” Brandon thrashed, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as the handcuffs clicked securely around his wrists. He glared past the detectives, fixing his venomous gaze directly on me. “Elena! Tell them to stop this! You’re my wife! You can’t do this to me!”
“I’m not your wife anymore, Brandon,” I said, my voice as cold and hard as stone. “You made sure of that the night you raised your hands against my mother and stole everything we built.”
As the detectives guided a struggling, humiliated Brandon out of his office and down the corporate hallway toward the elevators, employees peeked out from their cubicles, whispering and staring at the man who had thought he was untouchable.

I stood in the center of his empty office, looking out the large window at the gray skyline of Milwaukee.
The nightmare was over. The debt was being reclaimed. And for the first time in seven years, I was completely, beautifully free.
