Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Greenwich

The Greenwich mansion stood abandoned, its windows boarded up and its garden overgrown with weeds. It was a monument to failure, a skeleton of the life Mallerie had once envisioned.

Two weeks later, at 3:00 AM, a nondescript sedan pulled up to the curb. A man stepped out—a low-level associate Barrett had bribed with the last of his family’s savings. The man approached the house with a crowbar, his hands shaking.

He pried open the service door and slipped into the dark, cold kitchen.

He didn't know he was being watched.

High above the rafters, small, high-definition micro-cameras tracked his movement. In the Sterling security hub, Marcus watched the man crawl through the basement, approach the ventilation shaft, and pull out a dust-covered, silver hard drive.

“He’s got it,” the analyst said.

“Let him walk out the door,” Marcus commanded. “We don’t want the drive. We want the trail.”

The associate scrambled out of the house, terrified, and drove toward a nearby motel. He didn't notice the black SUV following him at a distance, nor did he notice the local police cruiser waiting in the shadows of the motel parking lot, tipped off by an ‘anonymous’ call regarding a suspected burglary.

As the man stepped out of his car, he was swarmed by officers.

The hard drive was seized.

When the Sterling legal team analyzed the contents the following morning, they didn't find the original schematics. They found something much better: a cache of unencrypted emails and voice memos between Barrett and Taran, dating back years, detailing the deliberate, calculated embezzlement of Mallerie’s funds and the systematic sabotage of her professional reputation.

It wasn't just a patent defense. It was a confession.
