Chapter 3 - The Digital Paper Trail

While Ethan rested comfortably under an oxygen hood in the NICU upstairs, I set up a makeshift command center in the hospital cafeteria corner booth.

With my forensic software suite loaded via a secure virtual private network, I began the takedown.

First, I accessed David’s corporate email server through his cached browser token. As expected, he had sent an email to his firm’s human resources director and his direct supervisor, claiming he was taking an "emergency family bereavement leave" to handle a sudden crisis in Florida—using the firm's PTO while simultaneously billing the company for a bogus client site visit in Miami.

I captured the email headers, timestamps, and IP logs, exporting them into an encrypted PDF file.

Next, I targeted their financial assets. Using the administrative access tokens from our joint accounts, I immediately revoked all secondary card privileges associated with my stolen credit card. Then, I transferred every remaining dollar from our shared checking account into a newly created, unlinked trust account solely in my name and Ethan’s—leaving David’s personal debit card with a balance of exactly zero dollars and twelve cents.

I didn't stop there.

I pulled up the reservation details for the Grand Palms Resort in Key West—the luxury beachfront property Theresa had bragged about paying for with my credit card. I logged into the resort’s VIP concierge portal using David’s membership ID.

With a few deft keystrokes, I modified the reservation notes: “Guest David Vance and Theresa Vance requesting immediate security intervention upon arrival due to suspected fraudulent credit card usage and active financial investigation by corporate authorities.”

Finally, I dialed my father.

William Vance—founder and CEO of Vance Global Logistics—answered on the first ring.

"Valerie? Sweetheart, how is my new grandson?" his deep, authoritative voice boomed through the speaker.

"Dad, Ethan is safe. He had a respiratory scare this morning, but he's stable in the NICU at St. Jude's," I said, keeping my voice remarkably calm.

A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end. "A respiratory scare? Where is David? Why aren't you at home?"

"David and Theresa told me I was hallucinating, stole my credit card, locked my phone in a sweater pocket, and boarded a flight to Key West to go on vacation while Ethan couldn't breathe."

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush stone. When my father spoke again, his voice had dropped an octave into absolute, freezing granite.

"Where are they right now?"

"Over the Midwest, Dad. Flight 1482, landing in Miami at 4:00 PM EST, connecting to Key West."

"Consider it handled," my father said coldly. "Don't lift another finger, Val. Let your old man handle the logistics."
