Chapter 2 - The Clause She Never ReadBy sunrise, the conference room at Whitmore Publishing was full.

Not with executives.

With attorneys.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, Boston slowly woke beneath a gray October sky. Inside, every member of the board sat in complete silence.

Valerie entered fifteen minutes late, wearing another designer suit and the same diamond bracelet Margaret had given her years before.

She smiled confidently.

"I hope everyone is ready for a smooth transition."

Margaret looked at her quietly.

"So do I."

Valerie placed a leather folder on the table.

"I've already prepared the announcement introducing me as the new CEO."

Margaret nodded toward the company's general counsel.

"Please begin."

The attorney opened a thick binder.

"According to Article Nine of Whitmore Publishing's bylaws, all executive appointments require the approval of the controlling shareholder."

Valerie smiled.

"Exactly."

The attorney looked directly at her.

"The controlling shareholder remains Mrs. Margaret Whitmore."

Valerie frowned.

"That's impossible."

The attorney continued.

"Furthermore, under the Whitmore Family Trust, any beneficiary who physically assaults the grantor or attempts to seize company control through intimidation immediately forfeits all voting rights, trust distributions, and executive privileges."

The room became perfectly still.

Margaret slowly slid a certified copy of the trust agreement across the table.

"You never read it."

Valerie grabbed the papers.

"No..."

Her hands began shaking.

"This can't be legal."

"It already is," Margaret replied calmly.

The attorney spoke again.

"Effective immediately, Valerie Sullivan is removed as Vice President of Whitmore Publishing."

Another document followed.

"The investment fund used to establish Ms. Sullivan's literary agency was issued as a revocable family trust loan."

Valerie's face drained of color.

"A revocable..."

"Loan?" she whispered.

"Yes."

"Since the trust has been terminated, the outstanding balance is now due in full within ninety days."

Richard finally stood.

"This is revenge."

Margaret looked at him steadily.

"No."

"This is accountability."

Security quietly entered the room.

One officer placed an access badge collection envelope on the table.

"Ms. Sullivan, we'll escort you to collect your personal belongings."

Valerie looked desperately around the room.

No one moved.

No one defended her.

For the first time in years...

She understood exactly how silence felt.
