Chapter 2 - The Silent House

The ride to the city was surreal. We didn't talk. Daniel sat in the back of the SUV, his eyes fixed on me with a fierce, burning intensity, but he didn't touch me. He respected the fragile perimeter I had built around my heart.

When we arrived at his penthouse, the scale of his life hit me. It was quiet, luxurious, and filled with memories of the man I had loved—the man I thought had abandoned me.

"I never got your messages," Daniel said, finally breaking the silence as we stepped into the foyer. "I was in Singapore, in a blackout zone for weeks. When I returned, I was told you had accepted a payout and moved to a state where I couldn't find you. I hired investigators, Grace. I thought you had left me because you were scared of what my life would do to you and the baby."

"My father told me you didn't want us," I said, a tear finally tracking down my cheek. "He showed me proof, Daniel. He told me you'd paid for my silence."

"He lied to keep the audit away from him," Daniel said, his jaw tightening. "I would have walked through fire for you."

I sat on the white leather sofa, Emma cradled against me. The anger was fading, replaced by a profound, hollow exhaustion. I had been betrayed by the two people who were supposed to protect me, and rescued by the man I had been taught to doubt.

"What happens to them?" I asked.

"They'll face everything," Daniel promised. "The forgery, the extortion, the embezzlement. My father is already on the phone with the board. They're going to strip Robert of his pension, his status, everything. And then, there’s the matter of the false imprisonment and the emotional trauma caused to you and Emma."

He walked over, kneeling in front of me. "I don't care about the company, Grace. I don't care about the money. I care about you. I want to build a life with you—the one we planned before the world tried to tear us apart."

I looked at him, searching for the man I knew. He was there, beneath the suit and the executive polish, but there was a hardened edge to him now. He had been through the same trial by fire as I had.

"I don't know who I am anymore, Daniel," I said. "I spent twenty-one years as a Carter. I don't want that name. I don't want their life."

"Then you be a Whitmore," he said softly. "Or be whoever you want to be. Just be with me."
