Chapter 3: The House They Never Owned

Two hours later, attorneys arrived.

Five of them.

Black cars.

Dark suits.

Briefcases.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Ryan tried smiling.

Tried apologizing.

Tried pretending the garage had been a misunderstanding.

Nobody listened.

One attorney handed me another folder.

I opened it.

Then smiled for the first time all morning.

My father noticed.

"What is it?"

I looked directly at him.

"Daniel bought this house."

His face tightened.

"I know that."

"No," I said softly. "You don't."

The attorney placed a document on the hood of one SUV.

The property deed.

Daniel had never transferred ownership.

The house legally belonged to his estate.

And I was the sole beneficiary.

My mother's hand flew to her mouth.

Chloe looked sick.

Ryan stared at the paperwork.

The attorney spoke calmly.

"As executor of Captain Daniel Carter's estate, Mrs. Carter now assumes full ownership effective immediately."

My father shook his head.

"This can't be happening."

But it was.

The house.

The land.

The investment accounts.

Everything Daniel had protected for years.

Legally mine.

The same family that forced me into the garage was now standing on property they no longer controlled.

Then came the final notice.

They had thirty days to leave.

Ryan nearly collapsed.

Because his business was failing.

The Mercedes wasn't paid off.

The law school debt Chloe thought had disappeared was still there.

And the safety net they depended on had vanished.

In one morning.

Their entire future changed.
