Chapter 8: Home

Two years later...

The old house had been sold.

Too many painful memories lived there.

Nathan and Lily moved into a small home overlooking a quiet lake.

No security cameras watched the front yard anymore.

They no longer lived in fear.

On the first day of summer vacation, Lily raced across the dock laughing as sunlight danced across the water.

She turned back toward her father.

"Daddy!"

"Yeah?"

"I don't feel scared anymore."

Nathan smiled.

"I know."

She reached into her backpack and pulled out a drawing she had made at school.

It showed a little girl holding her father's hand beneath a bright blue sky.

Across the top she had written:

"The day he came home was the day I got my life back."

Nathan framed the picture above the fireplace.

Visitors often noticed it first.

Not because it was the most expensive thing in the house.

Because it was the most valuable.

Some people believed strength meant winning battles.

Nathan had learned something different.

Real strength was showing up when the people you loved needed you most.

And from that day forward...

Lily never had to wonder whether her father would come.

May you like

She already knew.

The End.
