Chapter 2: The Secret Nobody Knew Vanessa's scream echoed across the patio.
Vanessa's scream echoed across the patio.
"You psycho! That bag was limited edition!"
I folded my hands calmly.
"And Lily's birthday memory was one of a kind."
Brandon stepped between us.
"Mom, apologize. Right now."
Before I could answer, a small voice interrupted.
"No."
Everyone turned.
Lily stood beside the ruined cake.
Tears still covered her cheeks.
But this time she wasn't crying.
She was angry.
"Mom pushed it."
The patio became silent again
.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Sweetheart, that's not true."
"Yes, it is."
Lily pointed directly at her mother.
"You looked at Grandma first. Then you hit the cake."
Brandon frowned.
"Lily..."
But his daughter continued.
"I saw you."
Claire slowly lowered her drink.
"So did I."
Several neighbors exchanged looks.
One woman finally spoke.
"I thought I imagined it."
Another nodded.
"Me too."
Suddenly Vanessa wasn't facing just me.
She was facing everyone.
Then Claire pulled out her phone.
"I didn't realize I was recording, but I caught part of it."
The video lasted only a few seconds.
But it was enough.
Vanessa clearly glanced at the cake.
Smirked.

Then nudged it with her elbow.
The color drained from Brandon's face.
For the first time, he wasn't defending his wife.
He was staring at evidence.
