Chapter 3: The Truth No One Could Ignore

Dinner was forgotten.
The food grew cold while years of silence finally began to thaw.
Dad leaned back in his chair.
"I owe you an apology."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I thought Lucas was teasing. I didn't realize we were helping him diminish you."
I smiled weakly.
"It wasn't one dinner, Dad."
He lowered his eyes.
"I know."
Lucas suddenly stood.
"So what? She has money. Big deal."
His confidence sounded forced.
"You all act like she's some kind of hero."
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
"You left something out."
Lucas froze.
"What?"
She reached into her purse one last time.
"This."
She placed another envelope on the table.
My stomach tightened.
I knew exactly what it contained.
Dad opened it carefully.
Inside was a notice from our legal department.
He read the first line aloud.
"'Formal demand for repayment...'"
His eyes widened.
Lucas lunged for the papers.
"Give me that!"
Dad pulled them away.
The letter listed every unpaid personal loan Lucas had taken from the company over two years.
Not because he worked there.
Because he had repeatedly borrowed money from me.
Private loans.
Emergency loans.
Promises to repay "next month."
Each one had been documented.
Each one carried Lucas's signature.
Mom looked at me in disbelief.
"You loaned him this much?"
"I didn't want him to lose his apartment."
Lucas slammed his fist against the table.
"You said family helps family!"
"I did help."
I looked him in the eyes.
"You asked for help eleven different times."
The room became painfully quiet.
Dad finished reading.
"The total is..."
He swallowed.
"Three hundred and twelve thousand dollars."
Mom burst into tears.
Lucas pointed at Vanessa.
"You told them?"
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"Claire never wanted this to happen."
Everyone stared.
"I found the repayment notice by accident this morning while completing my hiring paperwork. I asked Claire whether she wanted to cancel dinner."
I remembered our conversation perfectly.
"I told her no."
Dad looked confused.
"Why?"
I answered honestly.
"Because I hoped Lucas would finally stop humiliating me."
Lucas laughed bitterly.
"So this was a setup."
"No," Vanessa replied.
"You set yourself up."
Then she quietly removed the necklace Lucas had given her.
She placed it beside his plate.
"I don't date men who build their confidence by destroying someone else's."
Without another word, she stood.
Before leaving, she smiled at me.
"I'll see you Monday, boss."
May you like
The front door closed softly.
It sounded louder than any argument.
