MY BROTHER DESTROYED MY KNEE FOR REVEALING HIS SECRET MARRIAGE…

BUT A NURSE’S QUESTION UNEARTHED THE PLAN MY MOTHER HELPED PLOT

PART 1

"Your brother lost his mind because you didn't know how to respect this family," Yolanda Ríos said, arms crossed tightly beside the stretcher. "Stop treating him like a criminal."

Maribel, the nurse, didn't break her gaze from Adriana. Adriana was 32 years old, her left knee completely shattered, and her pants cut open all the way to her thigh. The pain flared up like wildfire every time she tried to take a breath.

"I need her to answer," Maribel insisted. "Adriana, did someone hit you?"

Yolanda opened her mouth again, but Adriana gathered what little strength she had left.

"My brother. He used a steel tire iron from a car jack."

The police officer guarding the entrance pulled out his notebook. Yolanda turned pale before letting out a dry, hollow laugh.

"She’s heavily medicated. She’s always been dramatic."

Maribel stepped closer and asked a strange question:

"Then why did your brother call the hospital twenty minutes before the ambulance even arrived to warn us that you were suffering from delusions and that no one should believe you?"

Adriana felt a chill that cut deeper than the physical pain.

It had all begun forty-eight hours earlier when Mateo Ríos showed up at her Monterrey office holding a burgundy wedding invitation.

Adriana worked as a forensic auditor for a network of private hospitals. She reviewed contracts, wire transfers, and suspicious vendors. Mateo, on the other hand, ran a small construction company that he bragged about as if it were an empire.

Their mother had spent years making excuses for him. If Mateo owed money, it was because "businesses take time." If he screamed, he was "under immense pressure." If Adriana pointed out a lie, Yolanda accused her of being envious.

"I’m marrying Regina Garza in three weeks," Mateo announced. "It’ll be at an estate in Santiago. Over 250 guests."

Regina was the daughter of a steel tycoon from San Pedro Garza García. She was intelligent, well-educated, and entirely convinced that Mateo was a bachelor.

On the night of the engagement dinner, a folder slipped out of Mateo’s backpack while he was searching for his keys. Adriana caught sight of a certified copy from the Civil Registry.

Mateo Ríos and Lucía Treviño.

Date of marriage: Five years ago.

There was no record of a divorce, an annulment, or any pending legal proceedings.

The next morning, Adriana confirmed the marriage certificate at the Civil Registry and tracked down Lucía in Guadalupe. It took the woman several minutes to open the door.

"I’m Mateo’s sister."

Lucía closed her eyes.

"Is he finally marrying that rich girl?"

Adriana froze.

Lucía was still his legal wife. Mateo had been telling her that he was working out of state and that they would sort out their marital issues soon. On top of that, he had used a piece of land Lucía inherited as collateral for a commercial loan.

Regina received the proof that very afternoon. Before midnight, she called off the wedding, blocked Mateo, and alerted her family.

The next day was Adriana’s birthday. She wanted to be left alone, but Yolanda demanded a dinner "to straighten things out."

Mateo arrived empty-handed. He walked out to the garage and returned holding a metal bar nearly three feet long.

"I lost Regina because of you."

"You lost her because you already have a wife."

"You chose two strangers over your own blood."

"I chose not to be an accomplice."

Mateo raised the bar and swung.

The sound of her knee shattering was a dry crack. Adriana collapsed, screaming, her foot twisted unnaturally beneath her body.

Yolanda didn't call for help.

She clapped twice.

"You earned that for sticking your nose where it doesn't belong."

Mateo dropped the iron bar next to her and walked out with their mother. Adriana dragged herself across the floor, dialed 911, and blacked out.

Now, facing the nurse, she realized Mateo hadn't improvised any of it.

He had called the hospital before the attack.

And someone had given him the exact information he needed to try and make her look like a "confused" woman.
