CHAPTER 2 — THE HOUSE CHANGES OWNERS
The sound came first.
Click.
Then another.
Click.
Every lock in the house engaged at the same time.
Diane frowned.
“What was that?”
I slowly pushed myself up against the cabinet.
My vision still blurred, but I could hear perfectly.
The security system had activated.
Marissa rolled her eyes.
“Probably another one of Claire's dramatic little gadgets.”
Then every television in the house turned on.
Living room.
Kitchen.
Dining room.
Bedroom.
All at once.
The screens displayed live footage from the security cameras.
Footage of Diane screaming at me.
Footage of Marissa pushing me near the staircase.
Footage of today's attack.
The hot coffee.
The insults.
The threats.
Every second recorded.
Every word crystal clear.
For the first time all afternoon, neither woman spoke.
Their faces turned white.
“What is this?” Diane whispered.
I smiled.
“Evidence.”
The front gate opened automatically.
Several black SUVs entered the property.
Diane's confidence immediately disappeared.
“Who are those people?”
“My employees.”
Three security officers walked through the front door.
Behind them came my attorney.
And behind him came two police officers.
Marissa dropped the mug.
It shattered on the floor.
“No...”
My attorney handed me a folder.

“Everything has been executed, Ms. Bennett.”
I nodded.
The transfer order was complete.
Every temporary occupancy permission I had granted Diane and Marissa was revoked.
Effective immediately.
They were trespassing.
“This is Aaron's house!” Diane shouted.
My lawyer looked at her.
“No, ma'am.”
He opened the folder.
“Legally, it never was.”
