Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

The heavy oak doors of the grand estate closed behind the federal marshals, sealing out the flashing lights, the wailing sirens, and the sudden, chaotic media storm that was already erupting outside the front gates.
Silence settled over the mansion—a clean, heavy, peaceful silence that hadn't existed here in years.
I walked slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, resting both hands gently against my growing belly. Outside, the Pacific Ocean rolled in steady, rhythmic waves beneath a sky now littered with bright, cold stars. The storm had passed. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely my own.
Marcus stepped back into the office, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "The digital asset transfers he initiated have been successfully reversed and quarantined, Mrs. Hayes. The board has already been briefed on the emergency succession protocol, and your interim CEO appointment is locked in for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM sharp."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said without turning around. "Make sure the legal team releases the unedited cockpit telemetry and audio logs directly to the federal prosecutor's office within the hour. I want no loopholes, no plea deals, and no leniency."
"Consider it done," Marcus nodded respectfully before turning and leaving the room, closing the door quietly behind him.
I stood there alone for a long time, watching the moonlight dance across the dark water where I had fallen just a few days ago.
Richard had thought he was pushing me toward my end. He hadn't realized that the fall was merely the beginning of the drop that would clear away everything false, everything rotten, and everything dangerous from my life.
