Chapter 2: The Man in the Shadows

I couldn't breathe.

The grainy security footage kept playing while my fingers trembled so violently I nearly dropped my phone.

Daniel walked Mia toward the daycare entrance exactly as he had described.

He smiled.

He kissed the top of her head.

Then he looked over his shoulder.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Like he was making sure no one was watching.

A tall man wearing a black baseball cap stepped from behind a delivery van.

His face was hidden beneath the brim.

Daniel didn't appear surprised.

He walked directly toward him.

They spoke for less than fifteen seconds.

No audio.

Only movements.

The stranger handed Daniel a small paper bag.

Daniel accepted it without hesitation.

Then he crouched beside Mia.

He opened the bag.

Pulled out something tiny.

Wrapped.

Candy-sized.

He smiled as he handed it to her.

Mia clapped happily.

The stranger walked away.

Daniel watched him disappear before leading Mia inside.

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

My daughter had a severe peanut allergy.

Documented.

Life-threatening.

Daniel knew that better than anyone.

He carried her emergency medication himself.

He had attended every appointment.

Every allergy seminar.

Every birthday party where we checked every ingredient twice.

So why...

Why would he accept food from a stranger?

A soft snore came from beside me.

Daniel rolled over peacefully in bed.

I looked at him as if seeing a complete stranger.

For the first time in ten years...

I felt afraid of my own husband.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message from Ms. Parker.

Don't confront him yet. There's another video.
