Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Patriarch

By 4:00 p.m., the Carter family illusion began to fracture.
Daniel called again, his voice frantic, stripped of its usual condescending calm. I answered on the fourth ring, stepping out into the quiet hospital hallway.
“Nora?” Daniel breathed heavily. “What the hell is going on? Two patrol cars just pulled up to the club dock. They’re asking for Mom and Claire. People are staring!”
“Where is Lily, Daniel?” I asked quietly.
“She’s... you said she was at the hospital—”
“She almost died, Daniel. Do you understand those words? The doctor said ten more minutes and her airway would have closed permanently. Your mother left her wheezing on a couch because she didn't want to miss a boat reservation.”
“Mom said it was just a mild reaction—”
“Your mother lied to protect her own afternoon,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave, cold and absolute. “And you chose to believe her instead of checking on your own daughter. The police are currently taking statements. Child Protective Services has been notified. And my attorney has already filed an emergency injunction freezing the family trust accounts while we evaluate criminal negligence charges.”
Silence stretched over the line. I could hear the distant murmur of lake water, followed by Claire’s shrill voice in the background asking what the police wanted.
“Freeze the... Nora, you can’t do that,” Daniel stammered, panic finally cracking his polished veneer. “Mom’s business investments are tied to those accounts! If the bank locks them—”
“Then your mother should have used the EpiPen,” I said, and ended the call.
I walked back into Lily’s room. She had woken up, her big brown eyes blinking sleepily against the hospital lights.
“Mom?” she whispered, her voice raspy.
“I’m right here, sweet girl,” I said, leaning over the rails to kiss her forehead.

“Are we going home soon?”
“We’re going to a safe home, baby,” I promised, my heart aching with fierce, protective love. “Nobody will ever hurt you or leave you behind again. I promise.”
