Chapter 10 - The Brightest Chapter

Six months later, the Greenwich estate garden was bursting with life.

The October wedding that Richard Sinclair had plotted to hijack for corporate dominance never happened. Instead, on a warm, brilliant Saturday afternoon in June, a different wedding took place beneath the sprawling branches of the estate's oldest oak trees.

There were no corrupt tycoons, no hidden shell accounts, and no typed threats taped to apartment doors.

There was only sunlight filtering through green leaves, the gentle hum of string music, and the laughter of close friends and loyal estate staff who had become family.

Mia walked down the stone aisle ahead of me wearing a handmade white lace dress and a crown of fresh white daisies, proudly carrying a basket of rose petals—and, tucked safely over her shoulder, her trusty red ladybug backpack, filled with animal crackers and spare ribbons.

As I stepped out onto the lawn on Nathaniel’s arm, wearing a classic, flowing silk gown that caught the afternoon breeze, I looked across the grass.

Nathaniel stood at the altar waiting for me. He wore a tailored ivory-and-black suit, his broad shoulders relaxed, his eyes fixed entirely on me with an expression of absolute, unshakeable devotion.

When I reached him, he took my hands in his—hands no longer marked by the raw friction of plastic zip-ties, but warm, steady, and secure.

“You look breathtaking,” he whispered as I stood before him.

“You clean up alright yourself, Mr. Callaway,” I murmured back with a soft smile.

The ceremony was short, intimate, and filled with genuine joy. When the officiant finally pronounced us husband and wife, Nathaniel didn't hesitate—he pulled me close and kissed me in front of everyone we loved, while Mia cheered loudly from the front row, throwing an extra handful of rose petals directly at our feet.

At the evening reception under the glowing lanterns, as the music swelled and guests danced beneath the stars, I found myself standing by the stone terrace, looking out over the manicured lawns of the estate.

Nathaniel walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

“Thinking about the farmhouse?” he asked softly, sensing the quiet reflection in my eyes.

I leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

“No,” I whispered, smiling as I watched Mia twirl across the dance floor with Mrs. Whitfield. “I was thinking that sometimes, the scariest endings are just the universe clearing the path for the life you were always meant to have.”

Nathaniel tightened his embrace, kissing the side of my head.

“And the best part?” he murmured.

“What’s that?”

“We’re never letting go of the backpack.”

I laughed, turning in his arms to kiss him as the summer night wrapped around us in absolute, enduring peace.
