Chapter 4 - The Game in the Dark

Outside the estate, rain lashed against the windshield of the black armored SUV parked fifty yards from the main iron gates.
Inside the climate-controlled interior, Gabriel Tabárez sat in the front passenger seat, staring at a high-definition laptop screen mounted to the dashboard.
Suddenly, the video feed from the guest room camera flickered, distorted into static, and went completely black.
"What happened?" Gabriel demanded, leaning forward, tapping furiously on the keyboard. "Feed one is down. Feed two is down. All camera feeds just dropped!"
Beside him, his chief tactical operative—a broad-shouldered former mercenary named Bruno—checked his radio console.
"The main power grid for the house just went out," Bruno said, his brow furrowing. "The auxiliary generator should have kicked in within three seconds."
"Why hasn't it?" Gabriel snapped, a sudden knot of anxiety tightening in his chest.
"Unless someone manually tripped the main bus bar in the sub-basement..." Bruno trailed off, grabbing his radio. "Unit Two, this is Lead. Report in. What is happening down there?"
Static. Pure, unbroken white noise filled the cab of the SUV.
"Unit Two, answer your radio!" Bruno growled into the microphone.
Static again.
Then, slowly, the static cleared. A voice came through the speaker—low, calm, and utterly devoid of fear.
"He's sleeping, Gabriel."
Gabriel froze. He grabbed the microphone from Bruno’s hand, his knuckles turning white. "Alexandre..."
"You spent fifteen years planning this night, Gabriel," Alexandre's voice echoed through the dark cab of the SUV, crisp and clear. "You thought of everything. The legal takeover, the asset liquidations, the explosives, the signal jammer. You even remembered the old family story about my cold-blooded efficiency."
Gabriel spat into the mic, rage distorting his face. "You think cutting the lights saves you, Alexandre?! The timer in the basement is still running! You have less than eight minutes before that house turns into your tomb!"
"Then I suggest you check your signal jammer, Gabriel," Alexandre replied smoothly.
Bruno glanced down at his dashboard telemetry screen. Suddenly, a series of bright yellow warning lights began flashing across the diagnostic interface.
"Boss..." Bruno whispered, his voice rising in panic. "The jammer... the power draw just spiked through the roof! It’s overheating!"
In the sub-basement, Alexandre stood beside the mansion's massive 440-volt industrial battery backup bank—a system designed to power the estate's high-voltage perimeter security fences during municipal blackouts.
Using thick copper jumper cables he had stripped from the maintenance locker, Alexandre had wired the estate's massive, raw battery power directly into the guard's small handheld radio transmitter, locking the signal output onto the exact 433.92 MHz frequency of Gabriel's jammer.
He wasn't trying to break the jamming field. He was overloading it.
A massive, continuous burst of high-voltage electromagnetic interference surged outward from the mansion like a localized EMP wave.
Inside Gabriel’s SUV, the dashboard display suddenly erupted in a shower of white sparks. The radio console burst into smoke, the digital screens shattered, and the heavy signal jammer mounted on the roof of the vehicle let out a high-pitched, metallic whine before melting into a useless block of fused plastic and copper wire.
POP!
The jamming field collapsed instantly.
For the first time in three hours, cellular signals, satellite networks, and emergency frequencies flooded back into the valley like a broken dam.
And fifty miles away, at the Federal Police Operations Command Center in downtown São Paulo, the automated silent panic alarm—triggered the moment Alexandre pulled the main emergency breaker in the basement—instantly lit up the master tracking board:
ALERT: CODE RED — MÉNDEZ ESTATE MORUMBI — EXTREME THREAT IN PROGRESS.
Inside the dark SUV, Bruno stared in sheer disbelief at the smoking dashboard. "Our comms are fried! The jammer is destroyed! He bypassed the entire system!"
Gabriel grabbed his nickel-plated pistol from his lap, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a terrifying, unhinged fury. "Get out of the car! We're going in there! I'm going to kill him with my own hands!"
"Boss, no!" Bruno yelled, grabbing Gabriel's coat collar. "Listen!"
In the distance, rising over the sound of the falling rain and the rolling thunder, came the distinct, terrifying wail of dozens of high-powered police sirens, echoing through the mountain pass, closing in on the estate from every direction.
Gabriel stared out into the dark, rain-slicked driveway.

And there, standing silently on the grand marble portico of the dark mansion, holding a heavy halogen flashlight in one hand and his silver revolver in the other, stood Alexandre Méndez.
Unbroken. Unafraid. Victorious.
