Chapter 4 - The Vow on Marble

Emma looked at Aleandro with her bright, innocent dark eyes, seemingly unaffected by the heavy tension that had filled the room only moments before. She reached into her dress pocket and pulled out the small, silver wolf's head ring that had been taped around her finger.
"Mr. Aleandro," she said in her small, sweet voice, holding out the ring in her tiny palm. "I'm giving it back now. You came."
Aleandro looked at the silver ring resting in her hand—the ancient symbol of the Moretti bloodline, the mark that had brought down a traitor and altered the fate of a family empire.
Gently, Aleandro took her small hand into his broad, strong palm, but instead of taking the ring back, he closed her tiny fingers around it once more.
"No, Emma," Aleandro said softly, his voice echoing gently through the silent hall. "You keep it. You earned it."
He looked up at Sophia, whose eyes were filled with tears of relief and overwhelming gratitude.
"Sophia," Aleandro said, standing up slowly. "Your husband gave his life ten years ago shielding my father from an ambush in Palermo. This house owed your family a debt that could never be repaid with money. My cousin disgraced that debt. I intend to honor it."
Aleandro turned to face the entire assembly of capos, who stood along the long oak tables, watching the scene with deep respect.
"From this night forward," Aleandro announced, his authoritative voice echoing through the Grand Hall, "Sophia Vance and her daughter Emma are under the personal protection of the head of this house. Sophia will no longer work as a servant on this estate."
He looked back at Sophia. "You will be appointed the director of the Moretti Children’s Foundation in Palermo, with full management of our educational endowment. A private residence on the estate grounds—the east villa—is yours for life. Emma’s education, her health, and her future will be fully funded by the house of Moretti."
Sophia covered her mouth with both hands, a sob escaping her throat as she sank into a low curtsy. "Signor Aleandro... I... I don't know what to say... how can I ever thank you?"
"You thank me by raising a daughter as brave as she is today," Aleandro said gently, a rare, genuine smile gracing his severe features.
Don Calogero walked down the aisle, his ancient face softened by respect. He stopped beside Aleandro and looked down at little Emma, leaning on his heavy walking stick.
"A small girl with a powerful ring," Calogero said with a soft chuckle, his deep voice warm. "She saved more than just her mother tonight, Aleandro. She saved the honor of our entire house."
He looked at Aleandro, raising his glass of wine toward the head of the family.
"To Aleandro Moretti!" Calogero called out, turning to the room. "And to the little guardian of Cefalù!"
"To Aleandro! To Emma!" the seventy capos roared in unison, lifting their crystal glasses high under the blazing light of the chandeliers.
As the gathering resumed its celebration, Aleandro led Sophia and Emma out of the loud Grand Hall and into the quiet, cool night air of the courtyard garden.
The night sky above Sicily was vast and clear, filled with thousands of bright, cold stars. The wind rustled gently through the silver leaves of the ancient olive trees that guarded the estate.
Emma walked between Aleandro and her mother, holding both of their hands, swinging her legs happily as they walked down the stone path toward the brightly lit east villa.
"Uncle Aleandro?" Emma asked, looking up at him as they reached the fountain at the center of the courtyard.
Aleandro stopped and looked down at her. "Yes, little one?"
"If my tower falls down again... can I call you?"
May you like
Aleandro knelt beside her once more, looking into her dark, clear eyes with absolute, unyielding devotion.
"Emma," Aleandro whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "No matter where I am in the world, no matter how important the meeting, if you call... I will always come."
