Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and New Dawn

Three days later, the storm had passed, leaving the estate bathed in the pale, clean light of an early autumn morning.

Fiona sat on the stone terrace overlooking the lake, a warm mug of coffee between her hands. Her left thumb was still bandaged, but the neurological tremors were gone, replaced by the normal, healthy recovery of a young woman with a strong constitution.

Beside her, Arthur was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Dominic's men had brought to the house the previous afternoon. The boy’s cheeks were rosy, his laughter clear and bright across the lawn.

The sound of footsteps made her turn.

Dominic walked out onto the terrace. He was dressed in a clean, dark gray suit, his hair brushed back, looking every inch the king of the city's underworld. But as he looked out at his son, the hard lines around his mouth softened.

He sat down in the chair next to Fiona, his large hands resting on the stone table.

"The doctors say he will make a full recovery," Dominic said, his rough voice quiet. "No permanent damage to his nervous system. Because of you."

"I did my job, Dominic," Fiona said, looking down at her coffee. "He's a sweet boy. Anyone would have done the same."

"No," Dominic said, his eyes shifting to her face, intense and unblinking. "Most people would have taken the money and run when they realized what this house was. Dr. Reed was one of the most respected specialists in the state, and my wife had half the city council in her pocket. You fought them both with a bronze lamp and a pair of scissors."

A small, genuine smile touched Fiona's lips. "Trauma nurses don't like it when people mess with their patients."

Dominic reached across the table, his hand covering hers. His skin was warm, his grip firm but incredibly gentle, careful not to press against her bandaged thumb.

"The contract you signed is void," he said. "The fifty thousand dollars is yours, but I've added a trust fund in your name. You never have to work a night shift in a city hospital again if you don't want to."

Fiona looked up, meeting those icy blue eyes that she had once feared, but now found a strange, protective comfort in. "And if I want to stay?"

Dominic’s fingers tightened slightly around hers. "Arthur needs a proper medical supervisor for his recovery. And I... I need someone in this house who isn't afraid to tell me when I'm wrong. Someone I can trust with my life."

He stood up, pulling her gently to her feet beside him. Out on the lawn, Arthur noticed them and waved, his face bright with a happiness that had been stolen from him for far too long.

"Welcome to the family, Fiona," Dominic whispered into the morning air. "Nobody will ever hurt you again."
