Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

By 6:00 PM the following evening, a quiet, terrifying calm hung over the city of Chicago.
The sky was the color of bruised iron, heavy snow beginning to drift down through the skyscrapers, dusting the streets in white.
At St. Jude’s Private Clinic, Elena Martinez opened her eyes for the first time.
The room was vast, private, filled with fresh flowers, and guarded by four heavy-set men in dark suits standing outside the door.
Elena groaned softly, her head wrapped in clean white bandages, as she tried to sit up.
"Easy, Mrs. Martinez," a soft, gentle voice said from the armchair beside her bed.
Elena turned her head slowly, seeing a tall, immaculate man in a dark three-piece suit sitting beside her, reading a newspaper.
"Who... who are you?" Elena whispered, her throat dry. "Where is my daughter? Where is Sophie?!"
"Sophie is completely safe," Vincent said immediately, setting his newspaper down and leaning forward. "She is at my home, under the care of my personal staff. She had hot cocoa, she slept for ten hours, and she is currently playing with a set of silver antique chess pieces in my library."
Elena stared at him, her eyes wide with confusion and residual panic. "Your home? Who are you? Where am I?"
"My name is Vincent Torino," he said quietly.
Elena gasped, her hand instinctively clutching the hospital bedsheet. Every small business owner in the south side knew that name. It was a name whispered in hushed tones—the supreme lord of the city’s underground.
"Did... did Vane sell my debt to you?" Elena asked, her voice trembling. "Please... I don't have any money left... Please don't take my daughter..."
Vincent reached out, gently placing his hand over hers on the bedsheet. His touch was surprisingly warm, steady, and filled with a deep, reassuring strength.
"I am not here to collect a debt, Elena," Vincent said softly, using her first name for the first time. "Your debt is paid. Marcus Vane will never enter your shop again. In fact, he will never walk without crutches again."
Elena stared at him in total shock, her mouth opening slightly. "You... you stopped him?"
"Your daughter stopped him," Vincent corrected her with a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "She ran into my restaurant last night covered in your blood, grabbed my sleeve, and demanded that I save her mama. She was the bravest person I have ever seen in my fifty-three years on this earth."
Tears spilled from Elena’s eyes, dripping onto her hospital gown. "My sweet little girl..."
"You raised an incredible child, Elena," Vincent murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "And because of her bravery, I am going to ensure that neither of you ever has to fear a loan shark, a landlord, or a broken window again."
Before Elena could respond, Tony stepped into the room, leaning down to whisper into Vincent’s ear.
"Boss. Moretti’s convoy just crossed the river. Sixty men in fifteen SUVs. They are heading straight for the Golden Palm."
Vincent nodded slowly, standing up to his full height. He looked down at Elena, pulling a small gold business card from his pocket and placing it on her nightstand.
"Rest now, Elena," Vincent said gently. "I have one final piece of business to finish tonight. Then I will bring Sophie back to you."
"Vincent," Elena called out softly as he reached the door.
He paused, looking back over his shoulder.

"Be careful," she whispered genuinely.
Vincent felt a spark of warmth ignite in his chest. "I am always careful, Elena."
