Chapter 3 – What the Doctors Found

Three hours later...

The waiting room smelled of coffee, antiseptic, and fear.

Alejandro hadn't sat down once.

Every time the operating room doors opened, he stood.

Every time they closed again, his hope fell.

Finally, a doctor approached.

"Mr. Ramirez?"

Alejandro's heart stopped.

"Your wife is alive."

He exhaled for the first time in hours.

"But..."

The doctor continued gently.

"She suffered severe hypothermia and the cold triggered premature labor."

Alejandro's face drained of color.

"Our team managed to stop the contractions for now."

"The baby is still alive."

Tears filled his eyes.

"But there is something you need to know."

The doctor held up a photograph from Isabella's examination.

"The impact of the cold caused partial separation of the placenta."

"If she had remained outside another fifteen or twenty minutes..."

He couldn't finish.

He didn't need to.

Alejandro understood.

He almost lost both of them.

Behind him, Carlos quietly sat down and covered his face with both hands.

His wife began crying.

Neither of them looked toward the hallway.

Because standing there...

Listening...

Was Paola.

She had secretly come to the hospital expecting sympathy.

Instead she heard the doctor say one sentence that shattered every excuse she had rehearsed.

"This was not an accident."

"This was a preventable act that nearly became a double homicide."

A nurse who had photographed Isabella's frostbitten hands quietly contacted hospital security.

Another filed a mandatory report.

Before sunrise, two detectives arrived.

Paola finally understood.

This wasn't becoming a family argument.

It was becoming a criminal investigation.
