Chapter 4 — The Investigation
Federal agents arrived before midnight.
Campaign headquarters was secured.
Computers were seized.
Financial records disappeared into evidence boxes.
Then investigators visited the hospital.
Special Agent Rebecca Collins introduced herself.
"We need your statement."
I hesitated.
"I'm not strong enough."
"You don't have to tell us everything today."
She paused.
"But we also received something else."
She placed a folder beside my bed.
Medical photographs.
Nursing reports.
Security footage from my hospital room.
Marcus tearing the IV from my arm.
The slap.
His mother spitting on my gown.
The entire assault had been captured by hospital security cameras.
"He thought there weren't cameras," Agent Collins said quietly.
"There were."
