Chapter 4: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

The box labeled PRIVATE FILES – DO NOT DESTROY arrived at the District Attorney's Office just after eight the following morning.

Everyone in the evidence room assumed it contained financial records.

Instead, it contained lives.

Dozens of them.

Photographs.

Medical reports.

Marriage certificates.

Private investigators' notes.

Restraining orders that had mysteriously disappeared from court records.

Women.

Different cities.

Different years.

The same pattern.

Lead Prosecutor Elena Morales carefully opened the first folder.

A young woman smiled in a wedding dress.

Across the bottom of the page was her name.

Andrea Castaño.

Married to Santiago Rivas.

Three years before Valeria.

Elena frowned.

She immediately checked the official marriage records.

Nothing.

According to public documents, Santiago had only been married once.

To Valeria.

"So where did this woman go?"

No one had an answer.

The second folder belonged to another woman.

Marisol Vega.

Engaged.

Relationship ended suddenly.

Reason listed:

Psychological instability.

Attached was a psychiatric evaluation declaring Marisol delusional and dangerous.

The signature looked strangely familiar.

Dr. Eduardo Fuentes.

The same psychiatrist who had signed Valeria's forged evaluation.

Elena's stomach tightened.

"This wasn't one victim."

"This was a business."

Meanwhile, at the Salazar estate, Valeria tried to rebuild something resembling peace.

Her father insisted she rest.

The doctors insisted she avoid stress.

The baby insisted on kicking every time she attempted to sleep.

Teresa laughed as she placed warm tea beside her.

"He's already stubborn."

Valeria smiled softly.

"He gets that from his grandfather."

Ricardo pretended not to hear.

The smile disappeared when security announced a visitor.

"A woman says she has information."

"Name?"

"Isabel Navarro."

Valeria stood immediately.

"The assistant."

Ricardo nodded toward security.

"Bring her in."

Isabel entered looking exhausted.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

She carried a small backpack clutched tightly against her chest.

The moment she saw Valeria...

She burst into tears.

"I'm sorry."

"I'm so sorry."

Valeria gently guided her to a chair.

"You don't owe me an apology."

"I knew."

Isabel covered her face.

"I knew what he was doing."

"I was too afraid to stop him."

Ricardo quietly poured her a glass of water.

"What changed?"

She looked toward Valeria's stomach.

"When I saw you pregnant..."

"I realized one day it could be my daughter."

Silence filled the room.

Then Isabel opened the backpack.

Inside were six flash drives.

A stack of notebooks.

And Santiago's personal calendar.

"I copied everything."

For the next five hours, investigators reviewed the material.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

Recorded phone calls.

Hidden contracts.

One recording froze everyone.

Santiago's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

"If the wife becomes difficult..."

"...schedule the psychiatric evaluation."

Another voice answered.

"What if she refuses?"

Beatriz.

"They always refuse."

"That's why we sedate them first."

Valeria covered her mouth.

Ricardo's hands curled into fists.

The recordings became worse.

Women crying.

Doctors discussing fake diagnoses.

Lawyers preparing emergency conservatorship petitions.

Every case followed the same formula.

Find a vulnerable woman.

Marry her.

Control her finances.

Question her sanity.

Remove her.

Take everything.

If children were involved...

The children stayed with Santiago.

The prosecutor immediately contacted federal authorities.

"This is no longer domestic violence."

"It's organized criminal conspiracy."

News spread rapidly.

Television stations interrupted programming.

Financial channels reported emergency trading suspensions involving Rivas Holdings.

Business partners began withdrawing investments.

Banks froze multiple corporate accounts.

Within twenty-four hours...

The Rivas empire lost nearly forty percent of its value.

Inside the detention center, Santiago demanded another meeting with his attorneys.

"This will pass."

His lead attorney remained silent.

"SAY SOMETHING!"

The lawyer slowly placed several newspapers on the table.

Every headline carried the same story.

BUSINESS TYCOON INVESTIGATED FOR ABUSE NETWORK

FORMER EMPLOYEES COME FORWARD

MULTIPLE WOMEN IDENTIFIED

Santiago looked up.

"Media exaggerates."

The attorney shook his head.

"No."

"They've started talking."

"Who?"

"The women."

That afternoon...

Three women walked into the prosecutor's office.

Then five more.

By evening...

There were twelve.

Some had visible scars.

Others carried faded photographs.

One elderly woman brought a tiny pair of children's shoes.

She placed them on the table with trembling hands.

"My daughter disappeared after marrying into the Rivas family."

"I never stopped looking."

The room fell silent.

Late that night, Valeria sat alone in the nursery.

She gently folded tiny baby clothes into a dresser.

Blue blankets.

Small socks.

A stuffed bear Teresa had bought years ago.

She rested one hand against her stomach.

"You'll never know this fear."

"I promise."

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Ricardo entered quietly.

He looked older than he had only days earlier.

"They found someone."

Valeria turned.

"Who?"

He handed her a photograph recovered from the evidence box.

A smiling woman.

Dark hair.

Kind eyes.

Holding a little girl.

On the back, someone had written:

Sofía Alvarez – Transfer Complete.

"What does 'transfer complete' mean?"

Ricardo answered honestly.

"We don't know."

"But we're going to find out."

Before either of them could speak again, Ricardo's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What happened?"

Silence.

Then—

"When?"

Another long pause.

He slowly lowered the phone.

Valeria's heart pounded.

"Dad..."

He looked at her.

"Santiago's psychiatrist..."

"The one who signed every false diagnosis..."

"...was found dead tonight."

The room fell completely silent.

Because everyone understood the same terrifying truth.

Someone was no longer covering up the conspiracy.

Someone...

May you like

Was erasing every witness.
