Chapter 2 - The Footsteps in the Hallway

The footsteps approached the nursery with a measured, deliberate pace. They weren't the hurried, frantic steps of an emergency paramedic, nor were they the light, familiar tread of my mother.

My vision tunneled into a dark circle, the edges fading to black as my blood pressure plummeted to dangerous levels. I could barely lift my head from the ruined, blood-soaked carpet, but my eyes remained fixed on the open nursery door.

A shadow fell across the threshold.

"Emily?"

The voice belonged to Eleanor—my mother-in-law.

She stepped into the room, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her manicured hand, her face set in the usual mask of polite disapproval she reserved exclusively for me. She had clearly let herself in using the spare key Derek kept beneath the decorative planter on the porch.

"Honestly, Emily, the house is a mess of—"

Her words cut off abruptly.

Eleanor froze in the center of the nursery. Her gaze traveled from the floating shelves down to the cream-colored carpet, tracing the massive, horrifying crimson pool spreading outward from where I lay. Her eyes widened in genuine, unadulterated shock. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking ancient under the nursery's warm lighting.

"Oh... dear God," Eleanor breathed, dropping her handbag to the floor as she rushed forward, her heels clicking frantically against the wood.

She dropped to her knees beside me, completely unconcerned about staining her expensive wool trousers in my blood. She pressed trembling fingers to my freezing wrist, searching for a pulse.

"Emily! Can you hear me? Open your eyes!" she cried, her voice cracking with sudden, shattering panic. "What happened? Where is Derek?"

"He... he left..." I managed to whisper, the words tasting like copper on my tongue. "Said... said I was... dramatic... went to the mountains..."

Eleanor didn't waste another second hesitating. She pulled her smartphone from her pocket with trembling fingers, slammed her thumb against the screen, and dialed 911. Her voice was sharp, authoritative, and laced with absolute terror as she barked our address and demanded an ambulance immediately.

While she spoke to the dispatcher, I heard Noah crying louder in the crib, his little face turning red with hunger and distress.

"Eleanor..." I gasped, my vision completely darkening now. "Noah... take... take him..."

"I've got him, darling, just stay with me! Keep your eyes open!" she shouted into the phone before tossing it onto the floor on speaker mode. She scrambled to her feet, scooped my crying baby boy out of his crib, and cradled him tightly against her chest while kneeling back down beside me.

She took my cold hand in hers, squeezing it with a fierce, desperate strength that contrasted sharply with the cold indifference she had shown me for the past three years of my marriage.

"The ambulance is three minutes away, Emily," she sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked from my dying face down to the blood soaking into her designer clothes. "Hold on. Please, Emily, hold on. You're going to be fine."

As the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the quiet Tennessee afternoon, my mind drifted away, leaving behind a silence far heavier than death itself.
