Chapter 6 - THE STATE POLICE ARRIVE

The silence in the pediatric wing was broken by the sound of heavy, measured footsteps.
Two men in dark blue uniforms with the gold emblems of the Georgia State Patrol walked through the double doors. They didn't look like the local deputies who frequented Donna’s charity lunches; they were tall, grim-faced, and carrying professional leather clipboards.
“Mr. Holden?” the lead officer asked, his voice booming in the quiet hallway. “I’m Lieutenant Graves, State Police Criminal Investigation Division.”
Brian’s face went from gray to white. He tried to summon his campaign smile, but his lips just twitched uselessly against his teeth.
“Lieutenant,” Brian stammered, his hand reaching out for a handshake that the officer ignored. “There’s been a misunderstanding. My wife is... she’s had an episode. We’re just arranging for our daughter’s transfer.”
Lieutenant Graves didn't look at Brian. He looked at me, his eyes resting on my swollen face, then on the phone in my hand.
“Ma'am, are you Megan Holden?”
“Yes,” I said, my voice steady.
“We received a digital report from Nurse Jenkins regarding an active assault and child endangerment case,” Graves said. “We’ve already reviewed the video file attached to the report. Is that file an accurate representation of what occurred at the Holden estate tonight?”
“Yes, it is,” I said.
Harold Vance stepped between the officer and Brian. “Lieutenant, I’m Harold Vance, counsel for the Holden family. This is a private domestic matter that is currently being resolved through legal channels. The video was taken without consent and is not admissible—”
“This is a criminal investigation of felony domestic violence, Mr. Vance,” Lieutenant Graves interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, flat register. “Consent is not required to record an active crime in progress. And as for your local jurisdiction, the state attorney general has already assumed control of this case due to a conflict of interest with the county sheriff’s office.”
He turned back to Brian.
“Brian Holden, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and felony child endangerment. Hands behind your back.”
“You can't do this!” Brian screamed, his public mask completely shattering as the officer grabbed his arm and spun him around. “Do you know who my family is? Do you know who my mother is?”
May you like
“I know exactly who she is, Mr. Holden,” Lieutenant Graves said as the metal cuffs clicked shut around Brian’s wrists. “And we have a warrant for her arrest too. She’s currently being picked up at her house for accessory after the fact and obstruction of justice.”
I watched as they led him away, his boots dragging against the linoleum, his gold campaign logo twisted and creased against his back. He looked small, weak, and utterly broken—the illusion of his power dissolved by a ten-second clip on a fourteen-year-old’s phone.
