Chapter 9 - The Arrival of Hope

At 3:14 a.m. on a quiet Tuesday morning, my water broke.
There was no panic, no shouting, and no cold, lonely hospital room. Marcus had arranged for a private medical transport, and by the time we reached the hospital, my obstetrician—the real one, whose signature had been so brutally forged—was already waiting for me.

At exactly 10:42 a.m., the room was filled with the loud, healthy cry of a newborn baby girl.
"She’s perfect, Clara," the doctor said, placing the warm, sweet infant onto my chest.
She had a patch of dark hair, bright blue eyes that looked around the room with an immediate, calm curiosity, and a strength in her tiny fingers that made me laugh through my tears.
When the nurse brought Maya into the room, she walked on her tiptoes, her eyes wide as she looked at her new sister.

"Her name is Hope, Maya," I whispered, reaching out to pull my oldest daughter into the bed beside me.
Maya looked down at the baby, a beautiful, proud smile spreading across her face. "She's very small, Mommy. But she doesn't have to be quiet anymore."
