The Secret Investigation
"What are you talking about?" Derek snapped.
The attorney calmly opened another file.
"For nearly two years, private investigators hired by Emily Bennett's estate have been monitoring Claire's welfare."
My heart stopped.
Derek stared in disbelief.
The lawyer slid photographs onto the table.
Photos of Claire wearing old, worn clothing.
Photos showing bruises.
Photos of school reports documenting emotional distress.
Photos of expensive purchases Derek had made while claiming the family couldn't afford activities for Claire.
Then came bank statements.
Thousands of dollars missing from the support account intended for Claire's care.
The deputy marshal stepped forward.
"Mr. Walker, you are being formally investigated for financial misuse involving funds designated for a minor."
Derek exploded.
"This is ridiculous!"
But nobody was listening anymore.
Not after the final piece of evidence.
A video recording.
One of the church ladies had secretly recorded the incident moments earlier.
Everyone watched Derek destroy Claire's recital dress.
Everyone watched him cut her hair.
Everyone watched him shove a six-year-old child to the floor.
When the video ended, the room was completely silent.
The deputy marshal approached him.
"Sir, turn around."
Derek's face lost all color.
The handcuffs clicked shut.
And just like that, the man who had terrorized our home was escorted out the front door.
For the first time since my sister died, I felt safe.
Then I looked at Claire.
The little girl wasn't watching Derek leave.
She was staring sadly at her ruined violin dress.
That broke my heart more than anything else.
