Chapter 5 - The River at Peace

One year later—August 2027.
The Savannah River shimmered like melted silver under the warm afternoon sun.
Along the historic riverfront promenade, families walked beneath the shade of the live oak trees, tourists enjoyed ice cream, and cargo ships moved peacefully toward the Atlantic Ocean.
At the edge of the renovated shipping pier—now converted into a beautiful public park funded by the Mercer Foundation—a large crowd had gathered for a dedication ceremony.
A bronze plaque sat mounted on a granite monument near the water's edge, reading: The Hannah Brooks Riverfront Park — A Monument to Courage, Protection, and Hope.
Gideon Mercer stood at the podium in a sharp navy suit, speaking into the microphone.
"Two years ago, I thought this river represented only loss," Gideon spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet crowd. "I thought power was built through control and fear. But a courageous woman proved to me that true strength is found in compassion—in jumping into the dark without hesitation to save a life."
The crowd applauded warmly.
Gideon walked down from the podium, stepping over to where Hannah sat in the front row.
She looked breathtaking in a white lace summer dress, her brown hair pinned up gracefully, her hazel eyes bright with tears of happiness.
Sitting beside her was Noah, now nine years old, wearing a small suit that matched his father's.
Gideon stopped in front of Hannah, stepping down onto one knee on the smooth green grass in front of the entire crowd.
A collective gasp went through the audience, followed by a wave of excited whispers.
Gideon pulled a small velvet box from his jacket pocket, snapping it open to reveal a magnificent solitaire diamond ring that caught the bright sunlight.
"Hannah Brooks," Gideon said softly, his voice trembling with rare, profound emotion. "You saved my son, you saved my heart, and you gave this family a home. Will you make us the happiest men in Savannah and marry me?"
Hannah looked down at Gideon, then at Noah, who was nodding enthusiastically with a giant grin on his face.
"Yes!" Hannah cried out softly, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. "Yes, Gideon! Absolutely yes!"
Gideon slipped the ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into a soaring embrace, kissing her passionately as the entire crowd erupted into thunderous cheers and applause.

Noah jumped up, wrapping his arms around both of their waists, joining the tight embrace.
As the ships glided peacefully down the Savannah River under the clear, blue sky, the waters that had once threatened to pull them apart now reflected a future filled with light, laughter, and an unbreakable love that would last a lifetime.
