CHAPTER 4 – THE TRUTH REMAINED
Eight months later...
The Vale estate felt different.
Not quieter.
Kinder.
Most of the expensive crystal had been removed.
In its place stood family photographs, fresh flowers, and shelves filled with books Adrian's late mother had loved.
Lena no longer wore a housekeeper's uniform.
After discovering she had postponed college to support her younger brother, Adrian quietly paid her tuition.
She accepted only after insisting on earning it.
She studied accounting.
"I want to help people uncover fraud," she said.
"You changed my life."
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"You chose honesty when lying would've been easier."
Marissa eventually pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, evidence tampering, extortion, filing false police reports, and financial crimes connected to the forged accounts.
Several accomplices were also arrested.
Every charge had begun with one mistake.
She believed fear would silence an innocent woman.
Instead...
Fear found courage.
One autumn afternoon, Adrian visited the restored wine cellar.
Only one shelf remained from the original collection.
On it stood a single crystal glass.
Untouched.
Behind it rested a framed photograph.
It showed Adrian, Lena, her younger brother, and the attorney who had refused to ignore the truth.
Visitors often asked why an almost empty shelf occupied the center of such an expensive room.
Adrian always answered the same way.
