Chapter 2 — The Badge Could Not Save Her

Chief Robert Miller stepped out of the first cruiser.

For years, his uniform had silenced arguments before they began.

Neighbors respected him.

Officers admired him.

Sarah believed that badge made her untouchable.

"Dad!" she cried, rushing toward him. "She's trying to ruin everything! Her kid lied and attacked me!"

Chief Miller didn't answer.

His eyes moved past Sarah.

Straight to the little boy lying unconscious beside the patio.

The paramedics were already kneeling over him.

"Possible concussion," one called out.

"Prepare the stretcher."

The chief's jaw tightened.

"What happened?"

Sarah pointed at me.

"Her son started screaming. I barely touched him."

Before I could speak, my husband quietly held out his phone.

"I recorded it."

The chief watched the video.

There was no argument.

No confusion.

The footage showed my son pointing toward the burning grill.

It showed Sarah walking across the patio.

It showed her full swing.

The slap echoed from the speaker.

Then came the horrifying sound of my son's head striking the concrete.

Silence.

Chief Miller lowered the phone slowly.

"Sarah..."

His voice sounded older than I had ever heard it.

"What have you done?"

She stared at him in disbelief.

"Dad... you're taking her side?"

"I'm taking the truth's side."

The officers standing behind him exchanged uneasy glances.

One quietly retrieved a pair of handcuffs.

Sarah took a step backward.

"No..."

"You can't arrest me."

Chief Miller looked at his daughter with tears gathering in his eyes.

"I don't have a choice."

The cuffs clicked shut around her wrists.

For the first time in her life...

her father's badge wasn't protecting her.

It was enforcing the law.
